No. 9 Upper Iowa posted a dominating 34-12 victory over the Beavers of Minot State University on Sunday afternoon in Minot, N.D. The Peacocks won seven of the ten matches including three by wins by fall, two by major decision and a tech fall. The victory improved UIU's record to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Sun.
The dual began at 149 pounds where
Damian Penichet scored three takedowns and two sets of nearfall points to post a 13-0 major decision and a 4-0 lead for the Peacocks.
Brock Benitz followed at 157 pounds and recorded his second fall of the weekend and tenth of the season. His pin of Zach Berry came at the 1:34 mark; he led 6-0 at the time of the fall.
The Beavers scored their first six points of the night in the 165-pound bout. Carlos Toledano led 8-5 in the second period when he picked up a reversal and turned the move into a pin of UIU's
Cody Nelson (3:48).
Jordan Gundrum got the Peacocks back into the win column with an 8-0 major decision at 174 pounds. The Peacock junior used a pair of takedowns and a reversal to score the win.
Minot State scored a 3-1 sudden victory at 184 pounds as Keegan Berry got the winning takedown of UIU's
Jamie Gehling in the extra period to pull the Beavers within five, 14-9.
Nick Baumler continued his strong sophomore campaign at a new weight with a 6-2 win over Briley Crissler. Baumler scored two takedowns to highlight his win for UIU.
Triston Westerlund lost a 5-3 sudden victory to Mitchell Eull in the heavyweight match as the Beavers stayed close, 17-12. Eull scored the winning takedown in extra time to secure the win.
Upper Iowa dominated the final three matches of the dual doubling their score during the same matches. Wins by fall by
Maleek Williams (2:28) at 125 and
Hunter Slifka (3:49) at 141 pounds sandwiched a dominant 20-2 technical fall by
Josh Walker. Walker recorded four takedowns and scored 12 nearfall points on four different moves to reach his tech fall in
The Peacocks will head to the Midwest Classic next weekend in Indianapolis, Ind.
