Peacocks Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime at Northern State

Northern State 2 - Upper Iowa 1 (OT). The Peacocks fell in the 99th minute on the road on Sunday, but set a program-record with 37 shot attempts against an NCAA Division II opponent.

Box Score The Peacock women's soccer fell in overtime on Sunday in Aberdeen, S.D. to the Wolves of Northern State University, and it might be one of the toughest losses of 2017. Upper Iowa took 37 shots in the game, the second highest total in the Northern Sun Conference this season, and the most in program history against an NCAA Division II program. UIU outshot the Wolves 37-5, but two of those shots went in for NSU, while the visitors only scored once. The 2-1 overtime loss sends the Peacocks to 4-10-1 overall and 4-8-1 in the NSIC, while Northern State improves to 5-9-1 overall and 5-8-1 in the league with the win.

Upper Iowa held a dominant 14-3 advantage in shot attempts in the first half, but it was the Wolves who scored first in the game. In the second minute, Shianne Rosselli took a pass from Stephany Estrada and scored to give NSU a 1-0 advantage. UIU held a 3-2 lead in corner kicks, but trailed 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, it was an even bigger domination by the Peacock offense. UIU controlled the game completely by leading 18-0 in shots. NSU's defense, though, was up to the challenge at keeping the ball out of the back of the net. Wolves goalkeeper Justine Charles tallied six saves in each half, and was a big part of why the game went to overtime. Upper Iowa forced overtime thanks to a goal in the 57th minute, when Maddie North scored off a corner kick for her first goal of the season. The game went into the extra period, where UIU would again control the match in shot attempts.

The Peacocks led 5-2 in shots in the overtime period, but it was the Wolves who capitalized to win the game. In the 99th minute Sydney Shintaffer scored after taking advantage of a corner kick by Nicole Griffith. With just seconds left in the first OT, Northern State celebrated the win.

UIU led 14-3 in shots placed on goal, and 14-3 in corner kicks. However, the Peacocks could not push the ball into the net more than once. The 37 shots is the most for the Peacocks against a Division II opponent, however, UIU has had more shot attempts in a game. Upper Iowa tallied 48 shot attempts against Division III's Wisconsin-Superior in 2009, 45 shots against NAIA's Robert Morris in 2007, and 39 shots against Division III's William Penn in 2006.

Upper Iowa will head back to Fayette next weekend for their final home game of the season, as they host the No. 13 Mavericks of Minnesota State University on Friday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. The team will then head to St. Paul, Minn. for the final game of the year at Concordia University, St. Paul on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
