Lewis Shuts Out Peacocks

Upper Iowa drops to 0-2 on the season after a 3-0 loss at Lewis.

The Peacock men's soccer team was unable to get anything going against the Lewis Flyers on Sunday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill. Lewis took a 1-0 lead into the intermission, and then scored twice in a six-minute span in the second half to put the game away. With the loss, UIU drops to 0-2 on the season, while the Flyers picked up their first win and improve to 1-1.

In the 12th minute, the Peacocks tried to clear the ball away from the goal, but unfortunately it was deflected directly into the back of the net to put the Flyers up 1-0. The first half was controlled by Lewis, who held the advantage in shots (8-1) and corners earned (2-0). Fausto Ordenana posted the only shot attempt for Upper Iowa in the first period, but it was blocked by Flyer defenders and the home team held the advantage at halftime.

The second half was much of the same. Lewis earned six shots in the first nine minutes of the second stanza. In the 64th minute, Devon Amoo -Mensah hit the crossbar on a header attempt, and the ball was deflected right to teammate Tim Adler who found the back of the net to put the home team up 2-0. Six minutes later, John Horstman took a cross-pass in front of the net and scored to put the match out of reach.

The Peacocks netted just seven total shots in the match, and were held without an attempt for twenty-two straight minutes in the second half. In the end, Lewis held the advantage in shots (20-7), shots on goal (7-3) and corners earned (9-1).

Goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt suffered the loss in goal, and netted four saves for the afternoon.

Upper Iowa will take a couple days off before heading out west to Hayward, Calif. for two matches on Thursday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 10. UIU will take on California State East Bay first before facing off with Humboldt State University to close out the west-coast trip. The trip to the Golden State will be the second of their-three week road trip to begin the season.
