The Peacock women's soccer team traveled west to Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday afternoon and dropped a Northern Sun Conference match 3-0 to the Augustana Vikings. The home team scored once in the first half, and twice in a 12-minute span in the second half to shutout Upper Iowa. UIU has now lost three straight matches after their upset of No. 13 Winona State, and drops to 2-4 on the season (1-3 NSIC). With the win, Augustana improves to 3-3-1, and 2-1-1 in league play.
Augustana controlled the match from the beginning, outshooting the Peacocks 6-3 in the first half. In the 20th minute, Viking forward Kallie Nordberg placed a cross in the box, and found teammate Samantha Tymkowicz, who converted her fourth goal of the year. Augie earned four corners in the first half as well, while UIU only tallied one. The Vikings held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the home team was even stronger on offense. There was an overwhelming disparity of shots in the second frame, as Augustana led 14-5 in that category. Augie held a 4-2 advantage in corners in the second half as well, and capped off their strong offensive play with two more goals. In the 68th minute, Reiley Klose connected from 20 yards away on a breakaway for her first goal of the year, putting the home team up 2-0. The Vikings put the match away 12 minutes later, when Rebecca Gasper scored her first goal of the season off a rebound off the post. The 3-0 lead was insurmountable for the visitors.
Caila Petrie earned nine saves on the afternoon, but takes the loss for UIU, dropping to 2-4 in net. Taylor Machacek netted four saves, improving to 3-3-1 on the season in goal.
The Peacocks will head back home to the friendly confines of Pattison Field on Sunday afternoon, when they welcome the Wayne State Wildcats to Fayette. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
