The Peacock women's soccer team kicked off their exhibition season at home on Thursday evening against Luther College. Upper Iowa held on to defeat the Norse 1-0 in a matchup of former Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes. UIU's starters played the majority of the first half and found a way to start the scoring for the season.
In the 29th minute,
Brianne Fenton attacked on the right side, and the shot attempt was blocked by a host of Luther defenders. On the ricochet,
Kelsey Hall located the ball and put it in the back of the net for Upper Iowa's first goal of the exhibition season.
The Peacock defense had a solid first half, withstanding three Luther shots, and holding the Norse scoreless. Goalkeeper
Caila Petrie finished the first half with two saves behind defenders
Mackenzie Taldone and
Rachel Fowler, who kept the Norse attack in check. UIU led 1-0 at the intermission despite trailing their guests in shots (3-2) and corners earned (3-1).
Upper Iowa's defense remained strong in the second half, holding Luther scoreless on three shot attempts. Offensively, UIU went on the attack taking six shots and earning two corners. Head Coach
James Price inserted a number of players in the second period, and UIU was able to hang on for the 1-0 win.
The Peacocks outshot their guests 8-6 overall, while the teams each recorded two shots on goal. UIU held the advantage in corner kicks (4-3) and saves (2-1).
Upper Iowa will continue pre-season play in Fayette on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. against the Kohawks of Coe College. The exhibition finale will take place on the football field in Harms-Eischeid Stadium.
