Peacocks Wrap Up Historic Season at NCAA Tournament

Upper Iowa battled valiantly against the #7 Golden Suns of Arkansas Tech in the NCAA Central Region 1 Final, but UIU came up just short and fell to ATU 1-0.

Upper Iowa battled valiantly against the #7 Golden Suns of Arkansas Tech in the NCAA Central Region 1 Final, but UIU came up just short and fell to ATU 1-0. The Golden Suns got a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning that ended up being the difference in the game.

The Peacocks finished the season with a 41-28 record.

Upper Iowa nearly struck first against the Golden Suns. Junior Riley Kruel led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and advanced to second on an error. Freshman Sami Kay Shafranski laid down a sac bunt to move Kruel to third, but she would be stranded there as ATU pitcher Jalissa Gumm worked out of the jam.

Senior Brooke Redmond worked out of a couple tough spots in the game as well. In the first, Arkansas Tech had runners on first and second with two outs, but Redmond got a pop out to second to end the inning. The lefty worked around a single and a double in the third inning to hold ATU scoreless.

A run finally came across home plate in the top of the sixth inning when Arkansas Tech's Kambri Hill hit a solo run.

The Peacocks late attempt at a rally came in the bottom of the seventh when senior Lauren Marlinghaus singled to lead off the inning. Freshman Julia Buffington pinch-ran and moved to second on a wild pitch but that would be as far as she would get.

Redmond (22-6) threw a complete game and held the Golden Suns to the lone run on six hits, while striking out four and walking one.

The loss, however, couldn't lessen how special of a season it was for the Peacocks. Upper Iowa shattered the school record for wins in a season with 41, surpassing the previous record of 28 set in 2013. UIU broke onto the scene in the Northern Sun Conference and finished tied for second with a school record 21 conference wins. The Peacocks qualified for the NCAA Central Region Tournament for the first time in program history after winning the NSIC Tournament.

The Peacocks had a trio of players named to All-NSIC team. Both pitchers for UIU, seniors Redmond and Jacqueline Flood, were First Team All-NSIC honorees. Sophomore Sammy Garrett was named to the second team. Kruel, UIU's shortstop, became just the second Upper Iowa softball player to earn a NSIC Gold Glove award.
