The Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth extended their winning streak to 14 straight games with a pair of NSIC victories over Upper Iowa at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette. UMD picked up a 7-1 win in game one and outlasted the Peacocks in game two to earn a 6-3 victory and improve to 29-9 overall and 22-4 in the conference. After the losses, UIU drops to 14-23 overall and 10-16 in the NSIC.
In the first matchup, a pair of Peacock errors in the second inning allowed the Bulldogs to score the game's first run and a bases clearing, two-out double by Kyle Comer in the fourth highlighted a four-run inning that put UMD ahead 5-0. Grant Farley picked up his second rbi of the game with a single to left in the sixth inning chasing Brian Pierce home to push the visitor's lead to 6-0 and Comer made it 7-0 when he sent Farley home with a second straight double.
Luis Ravelo opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a hit through the right side and advanced to second when
Cody Booker was hit by a pitch. With one out, the Bulldogs made a throwing error trying to turn two and Ravelo came in for UIU's first and only run of the game.
Garrison Becker (1-1) took the loss allowing all seven runs, six were earned, on 8 hits while striking out 2 batters.
Ross Kulick threw 1.2 innings of relief without giving up a run on just one hit.
Spencer Diedrich improved to 4-0 on the year with a one-hit complete game for the Bulldogs.
In game two, the Bulldogs got three straight hits to open the first including a two-run double to the gap in right center by Alex Wojciechowski to take an early 2-0 lead. Minnesota Duluth picked up a run in the sixth inning when Farley opened the frame with a double and scored on an infield single by Comer.
UIU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with three unearned runs on a pair of walks, a fielding error and a two-run single by Ravelo.
Colton Janssen and Cal Seehasse both walked and with two outs it looked as if UMD was going to work around them but a throwing error on the infield allowed a run to score and left a pair of runners in scoring position for Ravelo. The UIU shortstop tallied his third hit of the game with a single to left center to plate both runners and tie the score 3-3.
Alex Wojciechowski put the Bulldogs back on top with a single through the left side to plate Cory Krolikowski, who pinch hit with one out and earned a walk to start the rally.
The Bulldogs tacked on a pair of insurance runs with two outs in the top of the ninth thanks to three hits including a double by Farley, an rbi-single by Jimmy Heck and a bases loaded walk to Tyler Wojciechowski.
Zachary Cain threw well as the Peacock starter allowing 2 runs and 3 hits in his 4 innings of work. Cain gave up the hits and runs to the first 3 batters and then shutdown the Bulldog offense for the next 4 innings while striking out 5 batters.
Ethan Eckelberg allowed a run in 2 innings of relief, while
Brandon Nicholson (1-3) took the loss with 2.1 innings of work. Nicholson allowed 3 runs on 4 hits.
Miguel Rodriguez and Kulick both got an out in the ninth inning.
Tommy Hanson earned the win for UMD with 2.1 innings of relief, while giving up 3 unearned runs on 2 hits. Colton Sinning picked up his first save of the season with 1.1 innings to close out Upper Iowa.
On the day, Luis Ravelo tallied 4 hits, while Janssen had 2 hits and
Jordan Kearns had the final hit of the day for UIU.
The Peacocks are scheduled to face the Vikings of Augustana University, the NSIC's top team in the standings, on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 30 and May 1, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
