Upper Iowa picked up a five-inning 4-2 win on Sunday over the Minot State Beavers before the weather turned for the worse and the game had to be called. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for noon, but had to be pushed back until 3 p.m. Game two was canceled.
Â
The Peacocks wasted no time getting on the board as senior
Erica Kirgan hit a two-run home run in the first. Junior
Riley Kruel singled to lead off the game for UIU and Kirgan hit a two-out bomb to put UIU up 2-0. It marks the 27th career homer for the Ankeny, Iowa native, which matches fellow senior
Jacqueline Flood for the most in Peacock history.
Â
In the top of the second it was junior
Katie Sammons' turn to swing for the fences. After senior
Tara Duran singled through the left side, Sammons hit a bomb to straight away center to give the Peacocks a 4-0 lead through two innings.
Â
Minot State came back with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Peacock lead in half, 4-2.
Â
Senior
Brooke Redmond took over in the circle for Flood starting in the top of the third and shut down the Beavers over the final three innings to earn the win as she allowed just one hit. Flood threw two innings and gave up two runs on two hits.
Â
Upper Iowa will return to the Eischeid Softball Complex for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12, against Concordia-St. Paul. First pitch will be at 2 p.m.
