Lions Roar in Rematch with Peacocks

St. Leo 13 - Upper Iowa 2. Upper Iowa took a break from Clearwater on Tuesday and played the Lions of St. Leo in their ballpark in St. Leo, Fla. The home team held the Peacock bats in check while posting 13 runs on 15 hits for a second win over the Peacocks in the last three days.

The Peacocks didn't have an answer for the St. Leo Lions on their home field Tuesday evening.  The home team pounded out 15 hits to score their 13 runs, while holding their guests to just 2 runs on 7 hits.  Upper Iowa (3-4) dropped their fourth straight contest and second to St. Leo (12-7) on the Florida trip.

After the Lions struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, the Peacocks were able to cut the gap in half when Eric Cottrell homered to right field to open the second inning.  In the fourth inning, the home team widened their lead with three runs on four hits highlighted by a two-run single with runners on second and third.  St. Leo added one more run in the sixth before Upper Iowa got a leadoff double to the gap in right center by Colton Janssen.  Janssen came around to score later in the inning as the Lions were turning a double play.

Leading 6-2 at the seventh inning stretch, the home team put another two runs on the board after a leadoff walk and a subsequent homerun to right for two rbi. St. Leo put the game away in the bottom of the eighth scoring five runs on four hits to secure the 13-2 victory.

Collin Thomas (0-1) took the loss for UIU with 6 innings pitched; he allowed 6 runs on 10 hits while striking out one Lion.  Nate Skare threw the seventh and allowed the walk and homerun, while Sawyer Bawek threw the eighth and gave up five runs on four hits.

Cottrell led the batters with two hits, while Cody Booker, Emmett Kulick, Janssen, Cal Seehase and Luis Ravelo all picked up one hit apiece.

The Peacocks will return to Clearwater for a match up against the Mountaineers of Mansfield University at 10 a.m. ET, 9 a.m. CT, on Wednesday.  UIU lost to Mansfield 5-3 in game one on Sunday.
