The Upper Iowa softball team continued its hot run through the spring break trip by picking up wins three and four in a row in Clermont, Fla., and wins five and six overall. UIU (9-7) beat Mount Olive 5-4 in game one of the day, followed by a 7-2 victory over Slippery Rock.
Freshman
Jenny Budds had just one hit on the day, but it was a big one as it gave the Peacocks a walk-off win over UMO. Junior
Katie Sammons led the Peacocks with three hits on the day.
Senior
Brooke Redmond earned wins in both games and improved to 6-2 on the season. She combined for 14 innings of work, while allowing just four runs, two earned, on 14 hits. She struck out 14 and walked just five.
The Peacocks return to action tomorrow when they take on Wilmington University at 1 p.m. and Pitt-Johnstown at 3 p.m.
Upper Iowa 5, Mount Olive 4The Peacocks started day two with a dramatic walk-off 5-4 win over Mount Olive. After taking a 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh, UIU surrendered three runs to the Trojans in the inning, only to have Budds come through with a walk-off single to score sophomore
Sammy Garrett.
Redmond picked up her fifth win of the year by pitching seven strong innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on eight hits. The Basehor, Kansas native struck out five and walked just a pair.
UMO got on the board first by scoring a run in the second inning, but UIU responded with an
Erin Drahozal solo home run in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1.
Upper Iowa took control in the bottom of the sixth on senior
Erica Kirgan's single to score junior
Riley Kruel, followed by senior
Lauren Marlinghaus roping a double to score both Kirgan and junior
Tara Walls which gave UIU a 4-1 lead.
Mount Olive mounted a comeback in the top half of the seventh, scoring three runs to tie the game at 4-4 and set up Budds for the heroics.
In the bottom of the seventh, with Garrett and Kruel on base, Budds came through in the clutch with a single to score Garrett.
Upper Iowa 7, Slippery Rock 2Upper Iowa picked up a third consecutive day sweep and its sixth win in a row with a 7-2 victory over Slippery Rock University. UIU scored seven unanswered runs from the third to the seventh inning to win the game handedly.
Redmond earned her second win of the day and sixth of the year in the game. The lefty went seven inning and allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits while striking out nine and walking three.
Slippery Rock took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first. The Peacocks tied then took the lead in the third with two runs. To tie the game, junior
Katie Sammons came home on a passed ball and UIU scored the go ahead run on senior
Jacqueline Flood's RBI single to score Budds.
Upper Iowa added another run on a passed ball in the fourth to make it 3-1, before breaking the game open in the sixth with three runs to go up 6-1. Garrett brought the first two runs home on a triple then scored one batter later on an error.
Drahozal picked up an RBI groundout in the seventh to push the Peacock lead to 7-1 before SRU scored a lone run in the bottom of the seventh.Â
