The Peacock baseball team wrapped up their play at the Winning Inning Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. with a 9-4 victory over Mansfield University (9-6) to snap a seven-game skid. Upper Iowa took advantage of Mountaineer miscues in the field to get away from their opponent in the middle innings and post the win.
Mitch Moser improved to 2-0 on the mound with another strong outing. The junior went 7.2 innings and scattered 8 hits over that span while allowing 3 runs, 2 of which were earned. Moser walked 7 batters, but also recorded 10 strikeouts.
Jordan Kearns mopped up the last 1.1 innings allowing an unearned run.
Upper Iowa wasted no time putting three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning.
Anthony Calton singled through the left side to plate
Cody Booker, who singled to lead off the game, and Cal Seehase tripled down the right field line to push two runs home.
Mansfield answered with a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the first and tied the game in the fourth inning with a run on an rbi-double.
The Peacocks didn't' leave the game tied for long scoring three runs in the fifth on two hits and two errors. A grounder by Calton with the bases loaded gave UIU the lead back and a fielding error on a second grounder allowed two more runs to come across for Upper Iowa.
UIU added to their lead with a pair of runs in the seventh inning when Seehase recorded another rbi on a single through the left side and
Logan Bima drove in a run with a ground out to second. The Peacocks added one final run in the ninth on three hits including a George single to center, a Seehase run-scoring double down the left field line and a single through the left side off the bat of Luis Ravelo.
The Mountaineers scored an unearned run in the ninth to set the final score at 9-4.
George led the Peacocks at the plate with four hits, while Seehase tallied three and
Cody Booker and Calton each had two hits. In total, Seehase drove in four runners for UIU.
The Peacocks will now return to Fayette, where they are scheduled to host Bemidji State University in a nine-inning, non-conference affair on Friday, Mar. 18, at 1 p.m. UIU will remain at home on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 19-20, against Concordia University, St. Paul with a double header against the Golden Bears on Saturday and a single nine-inning game on Sunday. Both days of action with Concordia-St. Paul are scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
