The Peacocks welcomed the Vikings of Augustana University on Sunday for Senior Day in Fayette. Upper Iowa recognized their three seniors prior to the dual honoring
Mitch Funk,
Matt Paulus and
Jordan Rinken. The trio has been in the UIU wrestling room for the last five years together. UIU won seven of the ten matches to claim a 26-12 win and improve to 14-1 overall and remain undefeated in the Northern Sun at 7-0. Augustana falls to 16-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Matt Paulus (#8 NWCA) scored a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second period to build a 4-2 lead with over two minutes of ride time in his 133 pound match. The senior from New Hampton, Iowa used a head lock to throw Morgan Engbrecht to his back and get the pin just 18 seconds into the third period.
Jordan Roths lined up against Brandon Charbonneau in the 141 pound match. After a scoreless first period, Engbrecht got an escape in the second to take a 1-0 lead into the final period. Roths tied the match just ten seconds into the frame, but neither wrestler scored as the bout moved to sudden victory. As time wound down in the overtime period, Charbonneau got in on a shot and forced Roths hands to the mat for the winning takedown. A team point was deducted from UIU following the match for unsportsmanlike conduct after headgear was thrown.
Leading 5-3, the Peacocks sent
Damian Penichet to the mat for the 149 pound bout. Penichet scored an early takedown and then both wrestlers scored a reversal and two-point nearfall combo as the period ended. Penichet got a second takedown in the second period to build his lead to 8-4. Jacob Anderson opened the final period on top, but Penichet still got the best of him scoring a reversal and a takedown on the way to a 13-6 decision.
Jordan Rinken and Shawn Hatlestad met each other in the 157 pound battle. After a scoreless first period, Rinken started the second period on top and notched a two-minute ride with four nearfall points heading into the third. Hatlestad matched the two-mintue ride and forced a second stalling call on Rinken to score his only point. Rinken got the 4-1 decision for his 99th career victory and an 11-3 lead for Upper Iowa.
Mitch Rechtzigel scored an escape and takedown in the second period for a 3-0 lead, but
Zak Benitz (#5 NWCA) rallied with a pair of escapes around a penalty point for stalling to tie the match 3-3 early in the third period. Benitz picked up a late takedown to earn the 5-4 decision at 165 pounds.
Tim Weber claimed a pair of takedowns in the first two periods of his 174-pound match with
Colbey Vance to take a 5-2 lead into the final period. Vance got an escape in the third and added a late takedown to tie the match at 5-5. Vance completed the comeback with an escape early in the tiebreaker period and then maintained the slim advantage to score the 6-5 decision.
Aero Amo (#4 NWCA) picked up a first period takedown and then added a two-minute ride in the second period.
Dalton Westerlund scored a takedown on the edge of the circle, but an escape and final takedown for Amo gave Augustana their second win of the dual.
Leading 17-6, the Peacocks turned to
Ryan Parmely in the 197 pound match against Clayton Wahlstrom. Parmely picked up a quick takedown on an early shot and added a second takedown midway through the period. After a third takedown for Parmely, Wahlstrom got a quick reversal for two points. Parmely got an escape in the second and to open the third to push his advantage to 8-5. Each wrestler scored a takedown in the final minute as Parmely held on for the 11-8 win giving the home team a 20-6 lead.
Michael Lowman got a quick takedown and worked his position into a first period fall (2:03) for Augustana's third win closing the gap to 20-12 on the scoreboard with one match to go.
Maleek Williams gave up an early takedown to Duncan Stoebner, but nailed a throw midway through the first period and then worked to get the win by fall (1:20) just over a minute into the match.
Upper Iowa scored a 13-9 advantage in takedowns to fuel their seven victories and claimed a 2-1 advatage in bonus-point wins.
The Peacocks will now travel to #2 St. Cloud State University on Thursday night with the Northern Sun Conference Championship on the line. Both teams are undefeated in conference duals. The matches will begin at 7 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn.
