Upper Iowa won the first set of their match at the University of Minnesota Crookston, but the home team rallied to claim wins in the next three sets for the match victory. The Golden Eagles played strong at the net outblocking the Peacocks 13-8 and posting a 58-47 advantage in kills. UIU falls to 11-15 overall and 5-12 in the NSIC, while UMC improved to 10-15 overall and 6-11 in the conference.
The Golden Eagles took an 18-13 lead midway through the first period, but Upper Iowa stormed back with a 12-1 run to close out the first set win. The run was fueled by three kills from
Chelsea Berry.
UMC got out to an early lead again in the second set 17-13 and then extended their advantage to five, 21-16, thanks to three quick kills from Kassi Green. UIU had no answer this time as the home tied the match at 1-1 heading to the break.
The Golden Eagles controlled the third set hitting .415 in the frame with 20 kills and just 3 attack errors. After racing out to a 17-5 lead, the Golden Eagles held on for a 25-15 victory.
In the fourth set, UIU held a couple two-point leads in the early going, but the home team stayed close and tied the match at 13-13. The Peacocks fell behind by three points but fought back and tied the match at 22-22 on three successive kills by
Bethany Lovhaug, Berry and Lovhaug again. Unfortunately for the Peacocks, the three straight kills would be their last points of the night as UMC scored the final three points and claimed the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
Berry led the UIU offense with 13 kills while hitting .344 and Lovhaug added 7 kills from the middle.
Ashley Larson got her hands on 28 digs on the backline and Lovhaug added 6 blocks at the net.
Malissa LeClaire handed out 24 assists to lead the setters on the night.
UIU will travel to Bemidji State University on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start against the Beavers.
