#13 Lindenwood Tops Peacocks in Shutout Fashion

#13 Lindenwood 3 - Upper Iowa 0. The Lions used two second-half goals to put the Peacocks away on Saturday afternoon. Lindenwood secured at least a share of the MIAA title with the win over UIU.

The Upper Iowa men's soccer team traveled to St. Charles, Mo. on Saturday afternoon to square off with the No. 13 Lions of Lindenwood University. Lindenwood, one of the MIAA's best teams, secured at least a share of the conference title after posting a 3-0 shutout of the Peacocks. LU led 1-0 at halftime, and used two second-half goals to put the match away. With the win, Lindenwood improves to 13-2-2 overall, and stays perfect in the MIAA at 7-0. With the loss, UIU drops to 6-9 overall, and 3-4 in league play.

The home team wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Saturday. In the second minute, Xhovani Dokaj gathered a loose ball in the box, and sent it to the back of the net for his 16th goal of the season, giving the Lions the early lead. Lindenwood controlled play in the first half, holding a significant 17-2 lead in shot attempts and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Upper Iowa could not get much going in the first half, but did hold strong in the back line, with goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt tallying three first-half saves. The teams went into the intermission with the Peacocks trailing 1-0.

The second half was much closer statistically. Upper Iowa trailed in shots, 12-9, but held the advantage in corners earned, 5-3. However, Lindenwood took advantage of their opportunities to close out the Peacocks. In the 71st minute, the ball was in the box, and it deflected off Upper Iowa and rolled into the net for a team goal. Three minutes later, Adnan Mahmutovic took a pass off a corner kick, and sent a header in for an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Despite Rortvedt totaling four more saves in the second frame, Lindenwood was able to pick their spots to score and seal the 3-0 win.

For the match, the Lions won in shot attempts (29-11), shots placed on goal (10-3), and corners earned (9-5). Rortvedt tallied 11 total saves, but takes the loss in net, dropping to 6-9 on the season.

The Peacocks will head back to Fayette for their final two matches of the season. Upper Iowa will host the No. 20 Tigers of Fort Hays State University to wrap up MIAA play next Friday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. UIU will then host the Marauders of the University of Mary in a non-conference match to wrap up the season on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m for Senior Day at Pattison Field. U-Mary and Upper Iowa compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in all other sports, aside from men's soccer, and are the only two schools in the NSIC who have a men's soccer program.
