Wolves Strike Twice to Defeat Peacocks

Northern State 2 - Upper Iowa 0. The Wolves scored early in the first half and late in the second half to shutout the Peacocks in Fayette on Saturday.

The Peacock women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Northern State Wolves on Saturday afternoon in Fayette. NSU scored early in the match to take a 1-0 lead, and used stingy defense the rest of the way. The visitors put the game away in the 79th minute to claim the shutout victory. With the win, Northern State improves to 7-7 overall (5-7 NSIC). Upper Iowa drops to 7-7 overall and 6-6 in league play with the loss.

The Wolves missed their first shot attempt of the afternoon wide in the third minute, but capitalized on their second chance. In the seventh minute, Darian Leschewski took  a pass from Anna Bondy and went down the ride side of the field. Leschewski controlled the ball and sent it through the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Northern State held an 8-5 advantage in shots in the first frame, and took the one-goal lead into halftime. The Peacocks held the lead in corners (2-1) and saves (5-2), but could not find the back of the net offensively.

The second half was even statistically as both teams registered nine shot attempts and four saves. The difference in the final 45 minutes was Northern State's ability to earn corner kicks. NSU totaled six corners in the second half, while UIU picked up just two. The visitors put the game away in the 79th minute, when Shianne Rosselli sent a pass to Bondy, who scored to give the Wolves an insurmountable 2-0 advantage.

For the match, NSU led in shots (17-14), shots placed on goal (11-6) and corners earned (7-4). Stacey Cavill picked up the win in the net for Northern State and improved to 4-4 on the season after earning six saves. Peacock goalkeeper Caila Petrie tallied nine saves on the afternnon, and dropped to 7-7 in the net.

The Peacocks  will return to Pattison Field on Sunday afternoon when they take on MSU Moorhead at 1 p.m for Senior Day. Upper Iowa will honor their five seniors, Mackenzie Taldone, Maggie Olson, Brianne Fenton, Lauren Sharp, and Christiana Atteberry, after the match.
