Peacocks March Over Saints With Season-High Four Goals

Upper Iowa 4 - Presentation 2. The Peacock men's soccer team scored a season-best four times on Tuesday afternoon, including three goals in the first 24 minutes of play. The win snaps a three-match losing streak for UIU.

The Peacock men's soccer team scored early and often on Tuesday afternoon en route to a 4-2 victory over the Saints of Presentation College. In the first-ever meeting between the schools, Upper Iowa scored a season-high four goals, including three in the first 24 minutes of play. Four different Peacocks score in the match as Upper Iowa snapped a three-match losing streak with a home victory in Fayette. With the win, UIU improves to 4-7 on the season, while the loss drops Presentation to 3-10.

The scoring began almost immediately at Pattison Field when Peacock junior Ruairidh Crawford scored his first goal of the year just 14 seconds into the match. Crawford took the opening kick from teammate Dominic Boland and chipped it over the goalkeeper to give the home team the very early 1-0 lead. Upper Iowa set the tone, and dominated the next 35 minutes of action. UIU took 12 shots in the span, and found a way to convert two more times.

In the 19th minute, Aaron Morgan went after the ball, and as it popped up in the air, the Peacock midfielder was able to get his head on the ball to get off a shot. The header sailed past Presentation goalkeeper Matt Richardson, and Upper Iowa took a 2-0 lead. It was the second goal of the season for the sophomore, and the Peacock offense was controlling the game. Five minutes later, in the 24th minute, Hugo Alves was lining up for a corner kick, and on a windy afternoon, used his ability to hook the ball right past the defense and into the net for a corner kick goal. The redshirt-senior converted his first goal of the year, giving Upper Iowa what looked to be an insurmountable 3-0 lead. But the visitors were not done yet.

Presentation did not register a shot until the 35th minute of the match. The shot was blocked, but gave the Saints a corner kick. Presentation's Alfie Hipwell sent the corner to teammate Dylan Walsh, who converted a header into a goal to put the visitors on the board. Both teams headed to the halftime strategy session with the Peacocks leading 3-1. UIU was dominant, holding an advantage in shots (13-3) and corners (6-1).

The second half was a very even, tightly contested battle. UIU held a slight lead in shots (9-6) and the teams each registered three corners. Presentation cut the lead to one in the 63rd minute when Johnny Partida sent a free kick to Walsh, who scored his second goal of the match. UIU's lead was 3-2, and the home team was looking to put the game out of reach.

In the 87th minute, the Peacocks turned to their leading scorer on the season. Sophomore Blair Lyons got a pass from Hugo Alves and was able to convert from the middle for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The goal put the game away for good, and the home team celebrated a 4-2 mid-week victory.

For the match, the Peacocks held a significant advantage in shots (22-9), shots on goal (9-2), and corners earned (9-4). UIU goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt was mostly untested in goal, registering no saves on the afternoon. Rortvedt improved to 4-7 in net for the Peacocks, while Richardson tallied five saves while taking the loss for Presentation.

Upper Iowa hits the road to La Crosse, Wis. for another non-conference match on Thursday, Oct. 13 at Viterbo University. That match will begin at 4 p.m.
