THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK WRESTLING...The Peacocks will return to Dorman Gymnasium this Friday night for Salute to Service Night against Southwest Minnesota State University and Saturday night for Alumni Night against #14 Minnesota State University, Mankato. Both duals will begin at 7 p.m. Upper Iowa (11-1, 4-0 NSIC) is tied for the top spot in the Northern Sun Conference with an undefeated record along #2 St. Cloud State University, the #14 Mavericks (7-2, 3-0 NSIC) and Augustana University. The Mustangs come into Friday night's action with a mark of 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
SALUTE TO SERVICE... All current and veteran military, police, fire, and paramedics will receive free admission to the dual on Friday night and will also be recognized prior to the start of the dual on the mat.
UPPER IOWA UNDER THE MICROSCOPE...The Peacocks have earned 11 wins in their 12 duals with the lone blemish coming to Maryville University, 33-10, at the NWCA National Duals; the Saints were ranked #1 at the time. Upper Iowa has posted wins over #14 Wheeling Jesuit University (24-15), #18 Newberry College (24-13), #12 Tiffin University (29-15) and the #3 University of Nebraska-Kearney, as well as the #4 (NCAA Division III) University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Zak Benitz, ranked #6 nationally, has a team-high 26 wins this season at 165 pounds, but
Damian Penichetand
Colbey Vance are in close pursuit with 23 wins each.
Jordan Rinken continues to boast the low mark for losses with just one this season to go with his 13 wins. Vance leads the team with 16 bonus-point wins including a team-high 7 major decisions.
Jordan Rothsand Vance have both claimed a high of 7 falls, while Rinken has scored 5 tech falls.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS...The Mustangs are led by the reigning NSIC Wrestler of the Week Cole Wilson at heavyweight and freshman Kegen Fingalsen at 165 pounds. Wilson, a senior for SMSU, has an 18-3 record with eight bonus-point wins including six by fall, while Fingalsen has a team-high 20 wins to go with his 9 losses. The freshman has four pins and two major decisions under his belt this season. The Mustangs have a dual at home on Thursday night against Northern State University prior to their date with Upper Iowa on Friday. SMSU enters the two matchups after splitting a pair of duals against Augustana and the University of Mary. The Mustangs suffered a 27-12 loss in their NSIC opener at Augie, but bounced back with a 24-15 win over U-Mary in their first NSIC home dual of the season.
CATCHING UP WITH THE MAVERICKS...The Mavericks are led by a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in the form of 157-pounder Matt Mincey (#2) and 174-pounder Adam Cooling (#7). Mincey has registed a perfect record with no losses in his 16 matches; he has claimed 11 bonus-point wins including six by fall, four by tech fall and one major decision. Cooling has posted a 17-3 record and has eight bonus-point wins including four pins, two tech falls and two majors. Paul Selman, a 133-pound freshman, leads the team in wins with a 20-7 record, while fellow freshman Daniel Close has a 19-10 record at 149 pounds. MSU has won four straight duals including a 29-18 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead (29-18). At this year's NWCA National Duals, the Mavericks went 1-2 with a win over the #16 University of Indianapolis (21-12) and two losses to #5 Notre Dame College (27-9) and the #3 University of Nebraska-Kearney (27-19).
