Minot State Edges Upper Iowa in Double Overtime Duel

The Beavers of Minot State outlasted the Peacocks in double overtime to earn the victory, 71-69. Aleesha Cleaver played well with 21 points, while Carly Pagel had a team-high 6 boards.

Upper Iowa trailed by nine points heading into the final quarter of Friday night's match up at Minot State University, but the Peacocks rallied to take a one-point lead with just over a minute to play in regulation.  A free throw from the Beavers tied the game and pushed the contest into overtime where the teams still couldn't separate after the five minutes as Whitney Kieffer put down a layup with one second to play to force a second overtime.  The Beavers came away with the 71-69 victory in double overtime to improve to 8-9 overall and 5-6 in the Northern Sun, while the Peacocks dropped to 4-13 on the year and 3-8 in the conference.

Upper Iowa and Minot State fought through a low scoring first half with the Peacocks nursing a 22-20 lead as the teams went to the locker rooms for halftime. The teams each knocked down seven field goals in the first twenty minutes and both were plagued by turnovers as each reached double figures in the half.

The Beavers controlled the third quarter erasing their two-point deficit and taking a twelve-point lead, 41-29, after holding the Peacocks to just seven points in the first nine minutes of the period.  Upper Iowa got a pair of shots to fall along with a free throw over the final minute cutting into the MiSU lead.

Trailing 43-34 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Peacocks needed a spark offensively if they were going to rally.  After a Carly Pagel layup inside, UIU cut the gap to five, 46-41, when Kari Fitzpatrick knocked down a three-pointer.  The Beavers once again had an answer and pushed the lead back to nine, 50-41, with five minutes to play.

Upper Iowa dug down on defense and launched a 10-0 run on offense thanks to scores by four different players including a pair of trifectas from Sam Ofstad and Aleesha Cleaver.  The team rallied for a one-point lead 51-50 with 1:14 showing on the clock.   The Beavers tied the game with a free throw, but neither team converted with their last possession so the game moved to overtime.

The first half of the overtime period was controlled by the home team, the Beavers were able to establish a six-point lead, 59-53, midway through the period.  Upper Iowa once again had some tricks left up their sleeves.  The Peacocks outscored their hosts 7-1 in the final two and a half minutes and Kieffer capped off the comeback with a layup at the one second mark on the clock that knotted the score at 60-60.

In double overtime, the Beavers took control with another early run to take a 67-62 lead just two minutes into the extra period.  Cleaver and Kieffer combined for a quick five points giving UIU a chance down just one point, but wouldn't get any closer falling by two points, 71-69, when the final horn sounded.

The two offensives lit it up in the overtime periods; each team knocked down seven field goals during the ten minutes after struggling to convert shots during the regulation time.  Upper Iowa had the bullseye on the hoops from deep (9-25), but 23 turnovers proved to be too much to overcome.  Minot State was cold from behind the arc converting only two of their eleven attempts.

Cleaver led the Peacocks with 21 points and 4 rebounds, while Ofstad and Kieffer added 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Upper Iowa will be back on the court at the University of Mary on Saturday, Jan. 16.  The Peacocks and Marauders are set for an 4 p.m tip.
