The University of Mary dominated the first quarter and led by eleven points after the first ten minutes on the way to a 63-50 victory over the Peacocks in Bismarck, N.D. The Marauders pushed the lead to fourteen by halftime and held the Peacocks off in the second half despite UIU outscoring their hosts 26-25 in the final twenty minutes.
Brittney Dietz became U-Mary's seventh player to score more than 1600 career points; she scored a game-high 23 points with three triples in the game.
The Peacock offense was slow to start scoring only six points in the first nine minutes of the game, but a quick five points in the final minute pulled the gap back to eleven, 22-11.
Both teams started the second quarter with purpose on the offensive end combining for 17 points in the first two minutes, but a neither team scratched the scoreboard for more than four minutes. Â After the power outage, the Marauders pushed their lead to fourteen at the halftime break, 38-24.
Upper Iowa cut the lead to nine points, 45-36, after outscoring their hosts 12-7 over the opening six and a half minutes of the third quarter. Â Despite cutting into the lead, the Peacocks last field goal in the quarter came with over five minutes to play. Â UIU's final six points of the quarter came at the charity stripe.
Midway through the final quarter, the Peacocks cut the lead to eight, 55-47, thanks to four free throws and a three-pointer from
Aleesha Cleaver. U-Mary's defense came on strong over the final five minutes of the game to hold UIU to just three points for the remainder of the game to post a 63-50 win over the Upper Iowa.
Carly Pagel knocked down six field goals and added five points at the free throw line to score 17 points. Â The remaining Peacocks struggled from the floor only making 11 of their 43 shots. Â
Kari Fitzpatrick pulled down 7 rebounds and
Whitney Kieffer added 6 boards as UIU won the battle of the boards 40-38.
The Peacocks will return home next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23, against Wayne State College and Augustana University.
