The Peacock women's soccer team (0-1-1) lost for the first time in the 2015 season on Sunday afternoon, falling to the William Jewell Cardinals 2-1. The Peacocks allowed a pair of Cardinal goals a little over ten minutes apart in the first half and were unable to overcome the early deficit.
"This weekend, we learned we have room to grow and we will," said head coach
Brian Diaz. "We're only two games into the season and we'll be better."
UIU was down 2-0 before it took its first shot of the game, surrendering goals at the 12:42 and 23:28 marks of the first half.
However, the second half would be a different story. UIU matched the intensity of William Jewell and won the half 1-0. With 17:20 remaining in the game,
Madie Edwards and
Maggie Olson worked a beautiful give-and-go to spring Edwards behind the Cardinal defense and set up an easy goal, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1. It was the first goal of the season from the 2014 All-Central Region and All-NSIC First Team midfielder and sparked the UIU offense. In the final 17 minutes, the Peacocks had a handful of good goal scoring opportunities, but time was not on their side as the clock ran out before Upper Iowa could get on the board again.
Edwards led the Peacocks with three shots, placing two on frame.
Caila Petrie, who came in to play goalkeeper after halftime, made five saves in a scoreless half.
"We're going to grow, move forward and we'll be better," said Diaz.
Upper Iowa returns back to Fayette for its next match against Fort Hays State on Sept. 12 before opening the conference season at home against Winona State on Sept. 14.
