Upper Iowa and Michigan Technological University got together for the second time this season tonight in Fayette. The match kicked off the
2015 Peacock Open, which features 12 matches between 6 teams acrosss the Midwest from Thursday to Saturday, Sept. 10-12. The Huskies hit .233 including a high of .371 in the first set, while holding the Peacocks to a .098 hitting percentage. MTU improves to 5-0 overall, while UIU falls to 4-2 with both losses coming at the hands of the Huskies.
The two teams opened the first set matching each other point for point to reach a 13-13 tie, but the visitors erupted to close out the set on a 12-3 run to win 25-16. Upper Iowa came out strong in the second set jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead and pushed their advantage to six, 12-6, before the Huskies began to rally. MTU worked back even and tied the match at 16-16 and rattled off three more to take a 19-16 lead. The Peacocks pulled within one, 19-18, but couldn't get any closer as the Huskies posted a 25-21 win to take a 2-0 lead. The home team started well again in the third set taking a 9-3 lead, but a 10-4 run for Michigan Tech tied the score at 13-13. MTU pushed their lead to three, 17-14, and UIU didn't get back into the set losing 25-20.
Jennifer Mundt had a team-high 12 kills, while
Kelsey Hinrichs and
Alisha VanderWoude picked up 6 and 5, respectively.
Jenna Hermsen handed out 19 assists, and added 9 digs.
Taylor Williams recorded 15 digs to lead the back line, while Hinrichs and Mundt both added 12.
Upper Iowa struggled on serve receive giving up 5 aces and at the net dropping a 5 to 0 decision in team blocks.
The Peacocks will be back on the court tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against Northern Michigan University.
