The Peacocks lost a pair of close decisions to the #8 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato. Upper Iowa had a two-run lead, 4-2, and needed just two outs in game one to post an upset in game one, but MSU scored five run on a pair of homeruns to walk off with the come-from-behind win. In game two, the Peacocks scored four runs in the first inning, but were held scoreless for the remaining innings. UIU did have the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth, but couldn't rally. After the two losses, UIU falls to 15-19 overall and 7-13 in the NSIC. The Mavericks are now 25-4 overall and 15-3 in the conference.
In game one, the Mavericks scored a pair of runs in the second inning on a solo homerun and an rbi-single. The runs were all that
Mitch Moser would allow over the first 6.1 innings of his start for the Peacocks.
Upper Iowa answered with three runs on four straight hits to open the top of the fourth inning as
Alex George,
Eric Cottrell, Jacob Stenberg and
Adam Budron reached on base hits. Stenberg drove in one run with a double and Budron hit a two-run single. UIU added a run in the fifth when a leadoff double by
Luis Ravelo came home after a leadoff double and a pair of wild pitches giving the visitors a 4-2 lead.
Moser continued to have success on the hill allowing only one hit to the Mavericks from the third through the sixth innings as he set down 12 out of 13 batters over the four innings.
In the seventh, the Mavericks got a single to open the inning, but Moser got the first out on an infield fly. The next batter tied the game with a two-run homer, and after a walk, Moser left the game.
Dan Cwiertniak came in and allowed a single and then the game-winning homerun giving Minnesota State the 7-4 win.
Moser threw 6.1 innings and allowed five runs on just six hits to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
UIU outhit their host 11-7 and Ravelo, George, Cottrell and Budron all had two hits apiece.
The Peacocks came out strong in the second game scoring four runs in the first inning on three hits while sending nine batters to the plate and chasing the Maverick starter before the end of the inning. After loading the bases with no outs, George plated one run with a sac fly and Stenberg sent another Peacock home on a single. The third run scored on a grounder by Budron and the final run of the frame came in when
Colton Janssen singled to right field.
Minnesota State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to tie the game at 4-4. The Mavericks loaded the bases in the third, but
Shimpei Sato worked out of the jam without letting the home team take the lead.
In the fifth, the Mavericks scored a run thanks to three singles to take a 5-4 lead. Minnesota State added one in the sixth on a solo homerun, their fourth long ball of the day, and then scored their final run of the game in the seventh.
Trailing by three runs in the ninth, the Peacocks got a one-out single from
Josh Blake. After an a foul fly, Moser singled to right and brought the tying run to the plate, but were unable to plate any runs in their final at bat.
Sato fell to 2-1 with 5 innings of work; he allowed 5 runs on 11 hits while striking out 3.

Anthony Ruden all threw an inning in relief.
UIU recorded 8 hits in the game, but no player had more than a hit apiece.
Upper Iowa will host Southwest Minnesota State University this weekend in Fayette. The Peacocks and Mustangs will hook up in a four-game series at Robertson Woods Field on Saturday and Sunday with each double header beginning at noon.
