#5 Huskies Snap Peacocks Win Streak; Take Two from Upper Iowa

#5 St. Cloud State 5 - Upper Iowa 4 || SCSU 13 - UIU 2 (7). The Huskies defeated the Peacocks twice to open the NSIC season and improve to 18-0 on the season, while UIU falls to 7-7 on the year.

The #5 Huskies of St. Cloud State University snapped Upper Iowa's five-game win streak while pushing their own win streak to 18 games to open the 2015 season.  SCSU held on for a 5-4 win in game one and then dominated game two 13-2 to drop UIU's record to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC, while improving to 18-0 and 2-0 in the conference.

After St. Cloud State scored a run in the first and second innings, Upper Iowa rallied with a three-run outburst in the second inning of game one to take a one-run lead.  The first run came when a failed pickoff attempt of Jacob Stenberg rolled to a spot no Husky could get to in time as UIU's catcher came all the way around to score.  After Colton Janssen walked, Drew Woods sent a triple into centerfield to plate Janssen.  The final run of the inning came in when Luis Ravelo singled through the right side.

The Huskies tied the game with a bases-loaded ground out in the top of the third, but UIU's starter Tyus Adkins worked out of the jam without allowing any more damage.

Charley Cunningham shutdown the Huskies in the fourth and fifth innings, but in the sixth the Peacock reliever surrendered two runs on three hits as the visitors took a 5-3 lead.

Upper Iowa bounced back in the bottom of the inning and nearly broke the game open.  Eric Cottrell singled to right to open the inning and moved to third with one out when Stenberg singled to center.  Janssen singled up the middle to push Cottrell home and forced a pitching change.  Woods moved the runners to second and third with a grounder and Ravelo walked to load the bases with two outs.  Mike Moser laced a line drive toward the gap in left center, but Brandon Arnold sprinted to track down the shot that would have cleared the bases for the home team.

UIU still trailed by just one run in the seventh, but Reese Gregory put the Peacocks down in order including a pair of strikeouts to secure the win for SCSU.

Garrett Harrison improved to 2-0 with 5.1 innings of work allowing the four runs on five hits while striking out 9 Peacocks.  The save for Gregory was his second of the season.

Cunningham took the loss to fall to 1-1 as he gave up two runs in his three innings.

In game two, St. Cloud scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, but Jacob Greco hit his first collegiate homerun in the bottom of the inning to right center to bring the Peacocks within one.  The Huskies broke the game open in the top of the second with six runs on just two hits and two Peacock errors.  Arnold had the big hit of the frame with a double down the left field line.

SCSU added two runs in the fourth and fifth and one more in the sixth inning to push their lead to 13-1.  Upper Iowa scored a run in the bottom of the sixth.  With runners on the corners, a St. Cloud State reliever got called for a balk and brought George in from third.

UIU was unable to cut into the lead anymore as the game ended two innings early due to the NSIC's run rule.

Sheldon Miks improved to 3-0 with 5 innings on the mound with just one run allowed on three hits.  UIU's Mason Buster took the loss falling to 1-1 after allowing eight runs, four were earned, on just three hits in his two innings.

The two teams will be back on the diamond at Robertson Woods Field tomorrow for another pair of conference games in Fayette beginning at 12 p.m.
