The Peacock women's basketball team suffered a loss on the road to the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday night. The difference in the contest came down to the first ten minutes of the second half as the home team poured in 29 points in ten and a half minutes while holding their guests to just 10 points as the Bulldogs increased their five-point cushion at the break to a high of 24 points midway through the second. With the loss, UIU falls to 6-15 overall and 4-13 in the NSIC.
After the teams exchanged early buckets, the Peacocks went on an 8-0 run to take a six-point lead, 14-8, fueled by five points from
Lindsay Carroll and an old-fashioned three point-play from
Olivia Winkler. The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own to jump back into the lead and push to a high point mark of five with three and a half minutes to play. UIU cut the margin to a single point three times in the final minutes but had to settle for a five-point deficit heading into halftime.
UMD dominated the opening ten and a half minutes of the second half outscoring the Peacocks 29-10 and forcing four UIU turnovers during that span. The Bulldogs found the range from deep during the run knocking down five three-pointers in that time. The big run for the home team gave them control, which they maintained despite a 13-4 rally by Upper Iowa over the final four and a half minutes. UIU's push at the end set the final count at UMD 74 – UIU 62.
The Peacocks were led by a pair of Peacocks in double figures. Carroll tallied 17 points, while
Lauren Buck scored 16 points and pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds, which tied
Olivia Winkler. UIU converted 16 of their 17 at the free throw line.
Upper Iowa will get back on the floor Saturday evening at St. Cloud State University in southern Minnesota starting at 4 p.m.
