Peacocks Let One Slip Away In St. Cloud

St. Cloud State 112, Upper Iowa 104, 2OT- The Peacocks had a seven-point lead with less than three minutes left slip away and the Huskies took advantage, pulling away in the second extra period to win the game by eight

Upper Iowa led by seven with less than three minutes left in regulation, but St. Cloud State forced overtime with a 9-2 run in final two minutes. A Lauren Buck jumper as time expired in overtime forced a second extra period, but it was all Huskies in the final five minutes. SCSU outscored UIU 13-5 in the second overtime en route to a 112-104 win. With the loss, the Peacocks fall to 6-16 on the season and 4-14 in the NSIC.

An Olivia Winkler layup put UIU up by seven, 93-86, with 2:38 left, but the next minute and a half was owned by the Huskies. SCSU went on a 7-0 run by pushing the ball down the quickly, getting two easy layups and a three pointer in transition to tie the game at 93-93.

After the teams traded crunch time free throws, UIU had an opportunity to win it on the final possession. Lindsay Carroll got to the hoop, but had her layup attempt roll off the rim. Buck grabbed the rebound but had it deflected out of her hands. The Peacocks had one last chance on an inbounds play, but Winkler didn't get a shot off in time and the game headed to OT.

After two halves that saw both teams shoot over 50% from the field, neither the Peacocks or Huskies could shoot in the first overtime. SCSU got a layup on their initial possession in the extra period, but wouldn't score for the next three and a half minutes. UIU matched the Huskies on 2-of-4 shooting from the free throw line and the game was tied 97-97. St. Cloud hit a jumper with 10 seconds left to take the lead, but Buck came back with a jumper at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime.

SCSU jumped out to a 107-101 lead less than two minutes into the final period, hitting two trifectas and a layup on their first three possessions. After UIU climbed back within three, 107-104, the Huskies added another clutch three pointer with a minute left to put the game out of reach. St. Cloud State added a pair of free throws late to ice the game away.

In the first half, the Huskies came out red hot, hitting their first eight shots from the field to take an early 18-11 lead five minutes in. The visiting Peacocks weren't deterred and finished the first half on an 11-4 run, shooting 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line to head into the locker room up by one, 47-46.

Buck led UIU with 26 points and matched a season-high with 16 rebounds. She is now just one rebound away from the UIU record for rebounds in a single season, held by Upper Iowa Hall of Famer Vicky (Ringenberg) Rarick at 252. Winkler added 20 points and Carroll chipped in 19. Laura TerHark had a season-high 12 points, while Ashley Rosenstiel wrapped up UIU's double digit scorers with 10.
