After surviving a ferocious comeback in St. Paul the night before, the Peacocks let one slip away at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday night. Upper Iowa surrendered a game-tying three pointer with 0.6 remaining in regulation, then trailed by one with the last shot in overtime and turned the ball over in the final seconds to lose, 88-87.
After a poor shooting effort for the majority of the night, MSU had a late 6-0 rally to pull within one, 72-71, with 1:29 remaining. After back-to-back stagnant possessions on offense, the Peacocks stopped the run with a thunderous Roth dunk that appeared would seal the game for Upper Iowa. But on senior night in Mankato, the Mavericks completed their comeback when Miller hit the game-tying trifecta in the waning seconds. Grant Lang nearly banked home a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer, but the game headed to overtime with the momentum on the home team's side.Trailing in overtime,
Jace Hanna hit his second trifecta in the extra period with 1:01 remaining to pull UIU within one, 88-87. The Peacocks played tough defense on the ensuing possession and forced a miss.
Bo Pagel pulled down the rebound with 33 seconds left and the shot clock off. After a timeout,
Jimmy Roth had the ball on the wing with nine ticks left. Roth had been getting to the rim with ease all game, but he tried one too many times as he was stripped in the lane by Maverick guard Connor Miller. Minnesota State grabbed the loose ball as the clock hit zeros.
Upper Iowa had its traditional balanced scoring with six players in double figures. Lang led the pack with 16 points, but shot just 7 of 18 from the floor. Roth,
Jernell Hughes and
Jordan Hay chipped in 12 each, while
Luke Lenhart dropped in 11 and Hanna added 10. Roth led UIU with nine rebounds, while
Carson Parker had four assists to lead the Peacocks.
Upper Iowa will return to Fayette next weekend for games against Augustana on Friday and Wayne State on Saturday.Â
