UIU finishes the home season with a match against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, before UIU closes out the season at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota on Sunday. The Peacocks are 7-5 all-time against the Golden Bears and have won the last four in the series. UIU has a 1-6-2 record against the Mavericks, with the lone win coming in 2010.
LAST WEEK IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S SOCCERThe Peacocks fell 2-0 to the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles scored both goals in the second half despite being outshot 16-4 in the final 45 minutes. Then on Saturday, UIU dropped a close match to the Bemidji State Beavers 1-0 as BSU scored from a free kick with a little more than three minutes left in the game.
KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER1 TOURNAMENT IMPLICATIONS: UIU is battling for a spot in the NSIC/US Bank Conference Tournament this weekend. The top eight teams in the conference standings will make the tournament. The Peacocks, currently tied for eighth with Friday's opponent Concordia-St. Paul, have the potential to move all the way up to fifth in the standings with a pair of wins, but could also end up outside of the top eight. There are currently seven teams vying for the final four spots in the tournament, all within six points of one another in the standings.
2 STOUT DEFENSE: The Peacocks have surrendered one goal or less in 10 of 16 games this season and haven't allowed more than two goals in a game this season. Upper Iowa is allowing 1.086 goals per game, which is sixth best in the conference despite being tied for eighth in the current standings.
3 SENIOR SPECIAL: After spectacular sophomore and junior year, senior
Madie Edwards is tied for the conference lead and is 21st in the country in goals scored with 14, is 7th in the country in game-winning goals with 6, and is 26th in the country in total points with 29.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
vs. CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL: The Golden Bears (7-8-1, 6-6-1 NSIC) head into the final weekend of the regular season trying to wrap up a spot in the NSIC Tournament. Last Friday, the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead early in the second half against SCSU before the Huskies tied it five minutes later to push the score to a final mark at 1-1 in a tie. Then, last Sunday's match also looked headed for a draw between Concordia and Minnesota Duluth, but the Golden Bears scored the decisive goal in the 87th minute to win 1-0.
vs. MINNESOTA STATE: The #6 Minnesota State (14-1-1, 12-0-1) will travel to Winona State this weekend matchups to play the Warriors on October 30th before hosting Upper Iowa for Senior Day in Mankato on November 1st. Last week, MSU beat Duluth 1-0 before senior Korey Kronforst netted two goals including the game winner to help lead MSU to victory over St. Cloud State, 3-2, for their 14th victory on the year.
