Winona State University avenged a loss to Upper Iowa from earlier this season on Tuesday night in Winona, Minn. The #25 Warriors' offense was on fire recording 50 kills in just three sets and clicking on all cylinders with a .418 hitting percentage. The sweep by Winona State snapped a three-match win streak for Upper Iowa and dropped the Peacocks' record to 11-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
Lauren Kudronowicz led the Warriors with 15 kills and a .636 hitting percentage thanks to just one error. Danielle Rampart and
Maria Fruechte, both of whom did not play in Fayette when the Peacocks pulled off the upset of then #22 Winona State, combined for 20 kills and just 5 attack errors. The Warriros played very cleanly as a team registering just 9 attack errors in the match.
Upper Iowa posted only 30 kills in the three sets accounting for a little more than 57% of their points on kills. The remaining 22 points came on a pair of service aces by
Kelsey Hinrichs and miscues by the Warriors.
The Peacocks faced a 10-5 defecit early in the first set and trailed 5-1 in the second set. Upper Iowa did not recover from either early margin dropping the first set 25-17 and the second 25-15.
In the third set, Upper Iowa came out of the gates stronger and built a 12-8 lead over their hosts. After the teams went back and forth a few times, the Peacocks still held onto a 17-14 lead, but a 8-1 run by the Warriors which was fueled by four kills from Kudronowicz. Winona State finished off the sweep with a 25-20 win in the third set.
Jennifer Mundt had 7 kills while
Bethany Lovhaug and
Miranda LeJeune each added 6.
Jenna Hermsen had 15 assists and
Malissa LeClaire chipped in 9, while
Kelsey Hinrichs recorded 8 digs and 4 kills.
Upper Iowa will return home on Friday for Dig Pink Night at Dorman Gym against Bemidji State University at 7 p.m.
The program is asking fans to wear pink to the game in support of their efforts to raise money for Breast Cancer research. A bake sale, temporary tattoos and free will donations are all part of the plans for the night.
