On Saturday afternoon, Upper Iowa University inducted six new members into the Athletics Hall of Fame at their annual Hall of Fame Banquet. With the addition of the six new members, the Athletics Hall of Fame now has 188 members.
The idea for an Athletics Hall of Fame was proposed in 1978, but it was not acted upon until 1980 under the Darcy C. Coyle administration when the first class was inducted. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor the outstanding achievements of Upper Iowa University athletes, coaches and officials. The Hall of Fame members are all displayed in Dorman Gymnasium's lobby; the plaques include their picture, name, year of induction, and category for induction etched in black marble.
Matt Boehm (Class of 1999)... Matt Boehm is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an athlete. He graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in management.
A transfer to Upper Iowa, the Wadena, Iowa native decided to play football for Coach Paul Rudolph and the Peacocks. Boehm was a two-time selection to the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football team. He was an outstanding linebacker and earned a spot on the All-IIAC second team in 1996 and the first team in 1997. As a junior, Boehm led the team with 13 tackles for loss, 6 quarter-back sacks along with a total of 87 tackles. Although he battled injuries in his senior season, he was a Preseason All-American prior to the 1997 campaign and still earned an All-IIAC first team nod.
A Valley High School graduate, he was named to the Iowa All-State team in 1990 and 1991. After completing his collegiate career, Boehm played semi-professional football in Cedar Rapids, first for the Iowa Tractors and then for the Iowa Stars. Boehm picked up many honors - including first team defensive linemen in the Great Plains Football League and team MVP.
Boehm currently resides in Elgin, Iowa with his wife Amy and his children Abby and Logan.
Jorge Borgen (Class of 2002)... Jorge Borgen is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an athlete. He was born in Nicaragua, but was raised in Miami, Florida since the age of 3. He graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor's Degree in secondary education and industrial tech.
Borgen was an All-American Wrestler for the Peacocks and qualified for the NCAA Championships three times at 165 pounds in 1999, 2000 and 2002. During his final run in 2002, Borgen reached the Championship Finals where he finished as the NCAA Division III National Runner-up. He was a part of the highest finish of any Upper Iowa athletic team at a National Championship as UIU claimed second place at the NCAA Division III National Championships. Borgen was coached by Heath Grimm and the late Mike McCready.
Borgen graduated from Coral Park Senior High School in 1995; he was a two-time high school wrestling champion. Presently, he is a teacher and head wrestling coach at his alma mater, where he teaches industrial technology and construction engineering for the high school's Magnet Engineering Department. Borgen has been a coach and mentor for a program called Inner City Wrestling for the past ten years. The focus of the program is to get the youth off of the streets and onto the mats.
Ken Bye (Class of 1965) ... Ken Bye is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in 1965 after majoring in biology and physical education. Bye furthered his education by earning a Master's Degree in biology and an Administrative Degree from Indiana State University.
He was a four-time football letter winner from 1961-64 and was named to the All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team in 1964 as an offensive guard. He was the leader of the offensive line that allowed the team to finish third in the NCAA in scoring and total offense that season. Bye anchored the offensive line with fellow Hall of Fame inductee Bob Schulte on the 1964 team that earned a share of the IIAC Championship with an 8-1 record playing under the late Coach Eb Eischeid.
Bye has been an educator for 50 years, while serving for 24 years as a head football coach and 22 years as an Athletic Director. As a head coach, he won six conference championships and was named coach of the year seven times. He coached at Sterling Newman, Bradley Bourbonnais, Eisenhower and Blue Island in Illinois, as well as Michigan City, Elston and Highland in Indiana. Bye has earned a spot in the Hall of Fame in Michigan City and Highland. Prior to Upper Iowa, he graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago, where he was an All-Chicago Football lineman.
Bye currently resides in New Buffalo, Michigan. He and his wife Debbie are the parents of Kevin, Jill, Julie and Tommy.
Braulic Caballero (Class of 1956)... Caballero, a 1956 graduate of Upper Iowa and former Peacock football player, is being inducted posthumously into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame through special recognition. Cabby retired from Upper Iowa in 1995 after 40-plus years of service to the University; he passed away at his Fayette home this past June.
Over the years, Cabby served many roles at Upper Iowa. After graduating cum laude from UIU with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1956, the Oelwein native started work as an admissions counselor at the University and later became director of admission. He also served as the Upper Iowa acting director of public relations and assistant registrar. In 1966, he was named as the University's first dean of students and in 1984 he became vice president of student services, a position he served until his retirement. After Cabby's retirement, then UIU President Ralph McKay asked him to work with the advancement and alumni office.
In 2003, Cabby received the UIU Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to the University and was listed as one of the Top 10 UIU alumni during the University's 150th anniversary celebration. He also served on the UIU Alumni Association Board. The "Cabby Award" is presented annually to a student active in residence life. Most recently, Cabby loaned his name to the UIU Dean of Student Development Fund to support programming by the Office of Student Development.
Chyanne (Kleve) Kalishek (class of 2005)... Chyanne (Kleve) Kalishek is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an athlete. She graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor's Degree in criminology and sports science.
A four-year athlete for the Peacock Softball team, this talented woman earned numerous Iowa Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference honors including three All-IIAC second team nods in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She was also a two-time National Fast Pitch Coaches Association first team performer in 2003 and 2004. Kalishek played her senior season as Upper Iowa made their transition to NCAA Division II and the Peacock athletic teams did not qualify for IIAC awards or postseason play. The infielder accumulated the highest career batting average in Upper Iowa history, .419, with the program's second-most hits, 180, including 41 doubles, 13 triples and 24 home runs for program-records in career slugging percentage, .742, and on-base percentage, 486. She played for coaches Kris Hoff and Brent Kuker. After her graduation in 2008, she earned a Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy from Des Moines University and is presently employed at Covenant Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
A native of Waucoma, Iowa, she had an outstanding interscholastic career at Turkey Valley High School in softball, basketball and volleyball earning many all-conference honors in all three sports. She married her husband Tyler in September of 2014 and they currently live in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Bob Schulte (Class of 1965)... Bob Schulte is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete. He graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with a minor in history. Schulte then moved on to Northern Illinois University earning his Master's Degree in 1969.
After his graduation from Blue Island High School, where he was an Illinois All-State Football and Wrestling selection, Schulte became a four-time football and wrestling letterman for the Peacocks from 1962-65. He was an outstanding collegiate career as a football linemen and heavyweight wrestler for the Peacocks. Schulte was named to the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team and the NAIA District 15 First team in 1964 as a tackle. He won the IIAC Wrestling Heavyweight Championship two times claiming the title in both 1962 and 1963. He was a member of the 1964 squad, along with fellow Hall of Fame inductee Ken Bye, which claimed a share of the IIAC Champion-ship. He played football for the late Coach Eb Eischeid and wrestled for Dr. Andre Nadeau. After his time at Upper Iowa, he was invited to a NFL tryout with the Minnesota Vikings in 1965.
After wrapping up his academic career, Schulte embarked on a career in education. He spent 15 years as a teacher-coach, then 16 years as a high school principal at both Wheaton High School and Jacksonville High School.
Schulte currently resides in Montgomery, Illinois with his wife Peg, an Upper Iowa 1965 graduate, and his family Rich, Jeff and Becky.
