Upper Iowa was held to just a dozen points in the first half of Friday night's NSIC South Division match up at Wayne State as the Wildcats defeated their guests 69-38. The Peacocks struggled from the field all night converting only 26.8% (15-56) of the shots in the game. Wayne State improved to 16-3 overall and 10-3 in the NSIC, while UIU fell to 5-12 overall and 3-10 in the conference.
Upper Iowa did not have a player reach double figures in scoring on the night.
Lauren Buck led the team with 9 points, but converted only 3 of her 18 attempts, while
Olivia Winkler added 8 points.
The Peacocks grabbed the rebounding battle by three, 38-35, thanks to a great effort on the offensive boards where they pulled down 16. Unfortunately, the Peacocks were unable to turn those hustle rebounds into consistent success on the offensive end. Upper Iowa scored just 10 second chance points. Buck led the team in rebounds with 14, while Winkler and
Aleesha Cleaver both added 5.
Wayne State took an early 12-0 lead and held the Peacocks off the scoreboard for the first six minutes until Buck knocked in a layup. The lead grew to nineteen, 26-7, with two and a half minutes to play in the first half, but UIU headed to the break down sixteen, 28-12.
The Wildcats pushed the lead to twenty-eight, 50-22, midway through the second period after outscoring their guests 22-10. UIU's offense finally began to show signs of life over the final quarter of the game scoring 16 points nearly matching their output of the first three-quarters.
Upper Iowa will have the chance to get the taste of Friday's loss out of their mouth quickly. The Peacocks will move north to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the Vikings of Augustana College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
