The Peacocks scored the first five points of their NSIC South Division contest in Sioux Falls, S.D. against Augustana College, but the Vikings settled in after a slow start to defeat Upper Iowa 87-65. The first ten minutes proved to be the difference as Augie outscored their guests by eighteen points. The loss drops UIU's record to 5-13 overall and 3-11 in the Northern Sun, while Augustana improves to 13-8 and 7-7 in the conference.
After Upper Iowa scored the first five points, Augustana went on a 13-2 run that took just two minutes of gametime to put the home team ahead 13-7 at the first media timeout. The Peacocks fought back to tie the game at 17 thanks to four points each from
Lauren Buck and
Olivia Winkler. Augie used a 19-2 run over the next eight minutes forcing the visitors into 1 for 12 shooting and 4 turnovers during that span. Upper Iowa closed the gap to 11 at halftime, 40-29, thanks to 10-4 run over the final three and a half minutes.
Any momentum that the Peacocks had going into the break was lost over the first ten minutes of the second half as the Vikings pushed their advantage from 11 to 29 after outscoring UIU by eighteen, 30-12. The Peacocks were able to cut the margin back to seventeen, 70-53, thanks to a dozen straight points. The quick twelve points were fueled by seven points by
Aleesha Cleaver, who knocked down a three-pointer, a jumper and two free throws. The home team rallied and extended their lead back into the twenties by the end of the game posting the 87-65 decision.
Three Peacocks netted 12 points apiece including
Lindsay Carroll, Cleaver and Buck. Winler added 11 points, while
Olivia Meier chipped in 9 points. Buck registered her 12th double-double of the season with 16 rebounds, while Winkler and Meier both grabbed 5 boards. Carroll handed out 4 assists.
Upper Iowa will return to Dorman Gymnasium for a pair of NSIC home games. The Peacocks will welcome the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday at 6 p.m. and the Beavers of Bemidji State University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
