The Peacocks hung with the #6 Vikings of Augustana for about 30 minutes of gametime, but couldn't contain the three of the top scorers in the NSIC for the whole game. Augustana took control late in the second half to win 92-81, the fifth straight game the Vikings have scored 90 or more points.
Upper Iowa fell behind early as Augustana hit four of the first five field goals in the game, taking the initial 11-2 lead just three minutes in. UIU stormed back with hot shooting from behind the arc, hitting 5-of-8 from deep, to take a 21-17 lead midway through the half.
But UIU couldn't hold back the Northern Sun's top scoring offense for long. The Vikings took back the lead, 25-23, with six and a half minutes left in the half. At the 2:50 mark, the Peacocks were still within two, 37-35, before Augustana went on a 12-0 run punctuated by a Daniel Jansen dunk. Upper Iowa trailed 49-35 at the break. Â
The Vikings stretched the lead to 19, 57-38, less than two minutes into the second half. But Upper Iowa rallied behind a plethora of three point shooting and
Jimmy Roth getting to the basket, cutting the lead to four, 66-62, with 11:30 left in the game.
Unfortunately for UIU, that was as close as they would get. Augustana got to the hoop, scoring 12 points in the paint and 9 points from the free throw line during a 26-12 run over the next nine-plus minutes.
Roth led UIU with 22 points, while
Grant Lang had 15 points on 5-of-8 three point shooting.
Bo Pagel finished with 12 points and a team-high five assists and
Jernell Hughes rounded out the Peacocks double digit scorers with 10 points. Â
Upper Iowa will host Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State next weekend, Jan. 30 and 31.
