Dragons Burn Peacocks in Four Sets

MSU Moorhead 3 - Upper Iowa 1 (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16)

The Peacock volleyball team lost a four-set match on the road in the Northern Sun Conference on Saturday at Minnesota State University Moorhead.  Upper Iowa lost a close first set, but MSUM ran away with the second half of set number two for a 2-0 lead.  The Peacocks won set three 25-20, but the home team took control of the final set to win the match.  After the decision, both teams are now 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC.

Upper Iowa came out strong in the opening set taking a 10-7 lead thanks to a 6-2 run fueled by miscues by the Dragon offense.  MSUM took a three-point lead, 17-14, later in the set, but UIU was able to cut the gap to one, 20-19.  The home team scored five of the final seven points to claim the 25-21 win.

In the second set, UIU took a 14-11 lead after back-to-back kills from Jennifer Mundt.  MSU Moorhead's offense flipped a switch and became unstoppable scoring 14 of the final 16 points to win 25-16 and head to the locker rooms up 2-0.

For the second night in a row, Upper Iowa owned the third set posting a .310 hitting percentage in the frame.  The Peacocks broke an 8-8 tie with a 11-3 run to move ahead 19-11 in the set.  UIU posted a 25-20 win in the set converting 13 kills with only 4 attack errors.

In the fourth set, the Peacocks and Dragons matched each other point-for-point through the midpoint, but MSUM pulled away after breaking the 11-11 tie.  The Dragon offense once again took off and wrapped up the match thanks to a 14-5 run.

Mundt led the offense with 17 kills while hitting .271 thanks to just 4 attack errors.  Hailey Brown handed out 18 assists, while Jenna Hermsen dished up 12.  Amanda Weiss dug up 17 balls on the back line and Kelsey Hinrichs added 11 digs to her 7 kills.

The Peacocks will welcome the Huskies of St. Cloud State University to Fayette on Friday, Oct. 3.  Upper Iowa will then line up with the #2 Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Oct. 4.  The matches are part of UIU's Homecoming Weekend.
