Northern State 3 - Upper Iowa 1 (25-16, 25-18, 21-25, 25-17)

Box Score Box Score

The #24 Wolves of Northern State University claimed a 3-1 Northern Sun Conference victory over Upper Iowa in Aberdeen, S.D. on Friday night.  The Peacocks' offense went through a power shortage in the match hitting just .071 overall.  UIU falls to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC, while NSU improves to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

UIU's lack of offense in the match was due to 26 attack errors compared to only 37 kills in the four sets.  In the first, second and fourth sets combined, the Peacocks knocked down 24 kills while committing 22 errors on 112 swings.  In those sets, the Peacock offense struggled, but the Wolves offense tallied 45 kills and just 18 errors to post win by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17.

In the third set, UIU posted a four-point win, 25-21, thanks to a .209 hitting percentage (13 kills, 4 errors, 43 attempts), while forcing the Wolves into 10 hitting errors.

UIU and NSU were knotted at 10-10 in the first set, but the home team used a 8-1 run to pull away from their guests.  The teams opened the second set matching each point and remained tied at 14-14 midway through the frame.  The Wolves broke away again closing the set by outscoring the Peacocks 11-4.

Upper Iowa took a few four-point leads in the third set onto their only win on the night, while Northern State jumped out to a 9-3 lead early in the fourth set and never reliquished their lead to close out the match.

Four Wolves balanced the NSU attack with double-figure kills, while UIU's Jennifer Mundt led the visiting team with 13 kills.  Kelsey Hinrichs and Tyann Caspers both accounted for 7 kills, while Hailey Brown and Jenna Hermsen handed out 20 and 12 assists, respectively.

Amanda Weiss led the defense with 17 digs, while Taylor Williams and Hinrichs added 13 and 11.  At the net, Haylie Franklin and Mundt played well at the net denying 7 and 5 shots, respectively.

The Peacocks will be back on the court tomorrow in Moorhead, Minn.  Upper Iowa will challenge Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday at 5 p.m.
