The Peacocks picked up their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Wayne State on the road in Wayne, Nebraska.
UIU came into the 2014 season returning 93-percent of last year's goal scoring from a team that ranked second in the conference and 29
th in the country in goals per game. While the Peacock offense had been creating opportunities in their first four games to start this season, Upper Iowa had yet to score.
But you can't keep a beast caged for too long and just over 418 minutes into the season, the Peacocks solved their goal scoring problem.
"We struggled to find the back of the net in the first half, but our players kept sticking to the process, kept playing good soccer," said Head Coach
Brian Diaz. "We made a couple of adjustments at halftime that the players reacted really well too, and we got the three goals."
To start the scoring, senior midfielder
Lauren Rohrmeier beat a Wildcat defender on the outside and served in a cross to freshman
Morgan Springborn, who headed it into the goal to break the scoring drought 14 minutes into the second half. It was Springborn's first goal in her Peacock career.
Only 11 minutes later,
Aimee Wronski, last season's NSIC Newcomer of the Year, found her way on to the score sheet for the first time in 2014. Junior midfielder
Madie Edwards took the ball through the midfield and slid it over to Aimee, who beat a defender to it, then dribbled around the Wildcat goalkeeper and put the ball into the open net, making it 2-0 Peacocks.
When it rains, it pours, and it was pouring goals for the Peacocks on this sunny day in Nebraska. Just over a minute later, the Peacocks scored their third goal of the game, this time sophomore
Brianne Fenton took a pass from
Corinne Wronski in the box and beat the goalkeeper with a left footed shot to close out the game's scoring.
It was the first shutout of the year for goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Emanuel, who made six saves.
"I'm happy to see that we got a shutout in the back, which was deserved because our defense has played well all year," said Diaz.
UIU outshot the Wildcats 26-15, led by Aimee Wronski with six and Corrine Wronski, Rohrmeier and Springborn, who had four shots each.
UIU could have been discouraged by this season's slow start, but Diaz was happy to see the Peacocks battle through for their first win.
"I'm so unbelievably proud of our players and that through this unlucky start, they have stuck to the process and continued to play hard," said Diaz. "They've played great games and we've just been unfortunate to not get wins until today. But I'm just so proud of these ladies for the way they have kept working and getting better every day. This is the first of many for us."
The Peacocks return home for a pair of games next weekend. The first game will be on Saturday against Minnesota Duluth. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
