The Warriors of Winona State University rallied from behind for a win at home over Upper Iowa in the teams' Northern Sun Conference opener tonight in southeastern Minnesota. The Peacocks won the first set by a 25-23 count, but the Warriors were able to edge out their guests in set two, 25-22. After intermission Winona State took over and controlled play in the final two sets holding the Peacocks to 10 and 13 points, respectively. With the loss, UIU falls to 5-4 on the season, while WSU improves to 6-1.
Upper Iowa registered 15 kills in the first set, but only added 20 kills in the final three sets combined. Winona State, on the other hand, was consistent with their attack posting 14 kills in the first and third sets and 16 in the second and fourth frames. Winona State's performance in the third set was near perfect on offense as the Warriors hit .667 with 14 kills and 0 errors.
Danielle Rampart led the Warriors with 22 kills and a .488 hitting percentage, while the defense saw four players hit double figures in digs and the team posted 5 blocks (1 solo, 8 assisted).
Jennifer Mundt had a team-high 13 kills, while
Hailey Brown added 8 and 13 assists
Jenna Hermsen tallied 16 assists and
Amanda Weiss dug up 19 balls on the back line.
The Peacocks will return home to Dorman Gym this weekend for a pair of NSIC matches. UIU will host the University of Mary on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then welcome Minot State University on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
