Peacocks Fall to #19 Wildcats to Close Weekend in Mankato

#19 Wayne State 3 - Upper Iowa 0

Box Score The Peacock volleyball team wrapped up their play at the Maverick Invitational Saturday morning with a match against #19 Wayne State College.  The Wildcats swept Upper Iowa by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-16.  With the loss, UIU falls to 5-3 on the season, while WSC improves to 6-1 early in the season.

A 6-0 run in the middle of set one, gave the Wildcats a big advantage in the opening frame as Wayne State pushed their lead from 15-12 to 21-12 on the way to a 9-point decision.  Set two was tied at 13-13, but a 6-1 run by the nation's 19th best team pushed their lead to 19-14.  UIU fell in the second set 25-20.  In the third set, UIU fell behind early, but closed the gap to just two points, 16-14.  The Wildcats closed the door scoring nine of the final eleven points of the set to post a 25-16 win and earn the sweep.

The Wildcats hit .314 with 47 kills, while the Peacocks hit .182 with 34 kills in the three sets.  Jennifer Mundt posted 13 kills in the match and Alisha VanderWoude added 9 kills in the middle while hitting .500.  Hailey Brown dished out 24 assists to pace the Peacock attack.  On defense, Brown and Taylor Williams each picked up 12 digs.

Mundt and Brown were named to the All-Tournament Team for the second straight weekend.

"We played well at time today," said Head Coach Aaron Nelson.  "However, as well as we took care of the little details yesterday, we were too relaxed with those details today.  When we did execute on our side we were successful, but it just wasn't often enough to be able to take Wayne State out of their game."

Upper Iowa has a busy week ahead as they open play in the Northern Sun Conference.  The Peacocks will travel to Winona State University on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match before returning home for a pair of NSIC tilts on Friday and Saturday.  UIU will face the University of Mary on Friday at 7 p.m. and Minot State University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
