Upper Iowa improved to 6-0 in the Northern Sun with a 26-12 victory over the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato. With the victory, the Peacocks improve to 14-1-1 on the season. The home team earned six wins including a pair of wins by fall, two by major decision and two by decision.
Chris Paulus opened the dual for the Peacocks at 125. The junior scored an early takedown and built over two minutes of ride time in the first period and added two escapes en route to a 5-3 victory.
A takedown in first ten seconds of the match by
Matt Paulus (pictured above) gave the redshirt-sophomore a firm grip in the 133-pound match. Paulus opened the second period with a reversal and ended the match with six seconds remaining in the frame turning nearfall points into a win by fall (4:54).
Trailing 9-0, the Mavericks bounced back with a 10-5 decision as Alphonso Vruno (#8 NWCA) earned his 17th win of the year over the Peacocks' Jordon Roths.
An early takedown by Upper Iowa's
Edwin Cooper (#5 NWCA) put the sophomore in control in the 149-pound match. Cooper passed on the three nearfall points and extended his position into a win by fall (0:47) giving him his 19th pin and 34th win of the season. After UIU's second pin of the night, the home team had a 15-3 lead.
MSU's Adam Cooling picked up the visitor's second win of the night with a decision over
Zak Benitz at 157 pounds. Cooling earned the only takedown of the match in the second period and each grappler scored two escapes setting the final count at 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks.
In the 165-pound match,
Dalton Westerlund and Darick Vancura went to a sudden victory period tied 1-1. Westerlund claimed his 25th win of the season, 3-1, with a takedown midway through the extra frame.
The Mavericks picked up back-to-back wins at 174 and 184 pounds. UIU's
Trevor Duke battled hard at 174 pounds, but the normal 157-pounder dropped a 9-2 decision to Brendan Eichmann. MSU's Scott VanDeLoo earned an escape in the third period to win 1-0 over
Brock Gobin in the 184-pound match pulling the Mavericks within six, 18-12.
At 197,
Carl Broghammer (#2 NWCA) gave Upper Iowa a comfortable ten-point lead after a major decision win over MSU's Chris Zimmer. The redshirt-senior tallied two takedowns, an escape and three nearfall points en route to a 9-1 win. The Manchester, Iowa product is now just four wins away from claiming the all-time wins title at UIU after improving to 33-2 on the year.
Logan Hopp closed out the dual in style scoring five takedowns and two nearfall points on the way to a 14-5 major decision. The win pushed UIU's margin of victory to 14 points, 26-12.
Upper Iowa has a big weekend ahead of them now. The Peacocks will travel to face the #4 Huskies of St. Cloud State University on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. in a battle of the final two unbeaten teams in the NSIC. On Sunday, Feb. 16, Upper Iowa will host the Vikings of Augustana College to close out the regular season. The Peacocks will celebrate Alumni Day and Senior Day on the 16th.
