TONIGHT IN PEACOCK WRESTLING… The Peacocks will welcome the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato to Dorman Gymnasium on Friday night for the next installment of their annual rivalry. Upper Iowa has won six straight duals including all five of their Northern Sun Conference match-ups and sits at 13-1-1 for the season. UIU's lone loss came to Fort Hays State, currently ranked #6, and their tie came against #4 Central Oklahoma; both duals came in the NWCA National Duals in January. The Mavericks enter the dual with a 2-7 record overall and a 2-3 mark in conference action. MSU lost to Southwest Minnesota State, 31-9, in its most recent outing last Saturday in Marshall, Minn.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE MAVERICKS... The Mavericks are led by their 141-pounder Alphonso Vruno, who is ranked eighth in the latest NWCA Poll; the sophomore has a 16-10 record this season. Minnesota State also boasts three grapplers who have 20 or more wins including: Darick Vancura (23-9, 174), Adam Cooling (21-5, 157) and Scott VanDeLoo (20-14, 184). Cooling will enter his action on a six-match win streak.
IF A TREE FALLS IN THE FOREST... Last weekend, UIU won 16 matches including 8 by fall to push their season total of pins to 151, which is the second most among all divisions in the country. The top mark is 183 by Grand View College, while the top five is rounded out by Wartburg College (148), the University of Iowa (143) and St. Cloud State (138). Upper Iowa leads NCAA Division II with second place belonging to St. Cloud State.
PEACOCKS IN THE POLLS... Upper Iowa is currently ranked 7th in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll and four individuals are also ranked in the top 8 in the nation. The ranked Peacocks are Carl Broghammer (197, #2), Blake Sorensen (184, #4), Edwin Cooper (149, #5) and Logan Hopp (HWT, #6).
UNDEFEATED DUAL LEADERS... Sophomore Edwin Cooper and senior Carl Broghammer have led the Peacocks all season combining for 65 wins and just 4 losses. The pair are tied with a team-high and NCAA Division II best 18 falls. Both wrestlers are 15-0 in Upper Iowa's duals this season. Broghammer is chasing history as he enters the last two months of his final season with the Peacocks. The Manchester, Iowa product has earned 132 wins in his four-year career and is now just 5 wins shy of taking over the all-time lead in wins at Upper Iowa. Hall of Famer Cliff Thompson currently holds the mark at 136 wins.
