THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK WRESTLING… The #6 Peacocks head to St. Cloud State University on Saturday for a Northern Sun dual against the #3 Huskies. The annual showdown will see the winner put a firm grasp on the NSIC Championship. SCSU will wrestle Minnesota State University, Mankato on Thursday night and close their regular season with Upper Iowa, while the Peacocks will return to Dorman one last time for a match up against the third-place Augustana Vikings on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. St. Cloud State and Upper Iowa are both 6-0 prior to their final two duals, while Augie is 5-2 in NSIC competition with only UIU left to face.
THEY'VE FALLEN AND THEY CAN'T GET UP... Last week, UIU added two more falls to their tally elevating their season mark to 158, which is the second most among all divisions in the country. The top mark is 183 by Grand View University, while the University of Iowa is fourth with 143. Upper Iowa leads NCAA Division II with second place belonging to St. Cloud State (140).
PEACOCKS IN THE POLLS... Upper Iowa is ranked 6th in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll and five individuals are also ranked in the top 8 in the nation. The ranked Peacocks are
Carl Broghammer (197, #2),
Edwin Cooper (149, #2),
Blake Sorensen (184, #5),
Logan Hopp (HWT, #6) and
Dalton Westerlund (165, #8)
"HAMMER" DOWN... Senior Carl Broghammer has history within reach as he looks to close out his final season with the Peacocks on a high note. The two-time NCAA third-place finisher has earned 133 wins in his four-year career and is now just 4 wins shy of taking over the all-time lead in wins at Upper Iowa. Hall of Famer Cliff Thompson currently holds the mark at 136 wins. This season, Broghammer is 33-2 with 18 wins by fall. Only eleven wrestlers across the country and among all divisions have more victories than Broghammer, while his 18 pins are seventh most among wrestlers of all divisions and second-best in all of NCAA Division II.
SUPER "COOPER"... sophomore Edwin Cooper has put together an outstanding first campaign in Peacock blue. The New Lenox, Ill. native has a team-high 34 wins compared to just 2 losses including 19 wins by fall. Both he and Broghammer are 16-0 in duals this season. Cooper's 19 pins are fourth best among grapplers from every division in the country and tops among NCAA Division II wrestlers. Only seven wrestlers in the country among all divisions have more wins than the sophomore, who made a jump from #5 to #2 in the NWCA individual rankings this week.
