The Peacocks have found a recipe for success early in the season: high percentage three point shooting, spread the scoring across several players and don't turn the ball over. UIU (5-2, 1-1 NSIC) did all of that against the Cougars of Sioux Falls (2-5, 0-2 NSIC) on Friday night en route to a 82-66 victory in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Four players finished in double figures for Upper Iowa, who shot 42.4% from the field and 52.2% from beyond the arc. The Peacocks are now 5-0 when they have four or more players score 10 or more points.
Upper Iowa has also been among the nation's best in not turning the ball over, ranking fourth in the NCAA Division II with just 9 turnovers per game. Tonight was no different. The Peacocks turned the ball over just 6 times, while tallying 17 assists, for their fourth game of the year with at least twice as many assist as turnovers. Defensively, UIU forced Sioux Falls into 20 turnovers and turned them into 21 points.
The Peacocks used excellent shooting, including 7-of-11 from three, to build a 14-point halftime lead. Upper Iowa's first five buckets of the game were all from deep as UIU started 5-of-5 from three point range.
The second half was never closer than 11 and the Peacocks largest lead was 19.
Josh Weeber and
Bo Pagel led UIU with 13 point each,
Jace Hanna chipped in 12 points and 5 assists, while
Luke Lenhart used a strong night at the free throw line to finish with 10 points. Pagel had 6 rebounds to lead Upper Iowa.
Charles Ward paced the Cougars with 16 points and Mack Johnson was the only other USF player in double figures with 11 points.
Upper Iowa takes the floor again on Saturday, Dec. 6 against Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn. The game will tip off at approximately 7 p.m.
