Peacocks Fall In Overtime Again

The Peacocks scored twice in a minute to take the lead in the first half, but gave up a late goal to force overtime and lost in the extra period.

The Peacocks (6-4-1) took a 2-1 lead into the second half, but gave up a late goal and fell in overtime to #24 Fort Hays State (7-3-1), 3-2. It's the third overtime loss for the Peacocks in six MIAA games this year.

It was a slow start to the first half, with neither team taking a shot until nearly the 15th minute of the game. However, the first attack was a promising one for the Tigers. Freshman defender Luan Silva sent in a cross from the left side of the field and found senior midfielder Tanner Brock in the middle of the box. Brock was able to get his head on the ball and direct it past UIU goalkeeper Connor Rortvedt to break the game open.

The Tigers attack continued, as they would take the next several shots and corner kicks in the game before the Peacocks would have their first scoring opportunity. Twenty seven minutes into the game, UIU would finally get a shot tallied in the score book. Junior Rhys Williams took a corner kick and junior defender Gregg Fairley headed it just wide.

Williams made the most of his next corner kick opportunity. Three minutes later, he sent a ball into the box, leading to a scramble in front of the Tiger net. Freshman Johnny McBeth found the ball and got it to sophomore Ryan Pinkerton, who was able to bury it and tie the game at 1-1. It was Pinkerton's fourth goal of the year, tying him with McBeth for the team lead.

Less than a minute later, the Peacocks would strike again. Sophomore midfielder Fausto Ordenana took a cross from junior Hugo Alves and sent a shot off the cross bar. Ordenana corralled the rebound and put it in the net for his first goal of the year. UIU went into the break leading Fort Hays State 2-1.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half, but it would be FHSU who would finally take advantage.

On a corner kick, the Tigers used a quick touch from Brock to fellow senior midfielder Diego Cabral, who sent a cross toward the back post. Sophomore defender Drew Wilson headed the ball back against the grain and into the net to tie the game at 2-2.

UIU withstood the aggressive attack Fort Hays State brought in the last ten minutes, forcing overtime.

In overtime, it was Brock who would be the hero. Seven minutes into the extra period, freshman forward Mauricio Castorino put a cross into the box. Brock was able to win the ball and put it past a diving Rortvedt for the game winner.

The Peacocks were outshot in the game 11-18 and lost the shots on goal category, 4-11. Ordenana led the team with three shots, while Pinkerton and Rafael Pedroso had two shots each. Rortvedt made a season-high eight saves.

The Peacocks will play #15 Northeastern State next in conference play. The match is on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
