Second Half Surge Spurs Peacocks to Victory

Madie Edwards scored three times to put away U-Mary

Four goals in 16 minutes and a Madie Edwards hat trick helped the Peacocks rally for a 4-1 win over U-Mary on a cold and windy day at Pattison Field.

Mary took advantage of the wind early in the first half, scoring just eight minutes into the game. Senior defender Blaire Brookshire found a loose ball 25 yards from goal and ripped a shot that sailed past Peacock goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel into the net.

"We had a bit of a slow start and Mary is certainly good enough to punish us for that, and they did," said Head Coach Brian Diaz. "Credit to them for coming out ready to go. Once we conceded that goal, we snapped in and started to play a lot better."

Despite playing into the wind, the rest of the half was dominated by the Peacocks. After the goal, UIU outshot the Marauders 11-1 and controlled the majority of the game.

It appeared the score was going be tied when freshman Morgan Springborn took a shot that looked like it was going to find the net, but the Marauder's goalkeeper Shelby Buttron skied for the save and the game went into the half with Mary leading 1-0.

U-Mary's lead didn't last long in the second half. The Peacocks kept the pressure up, getting five shots on goal in the first five minutes. On that fifth shot, sophomore Brianne Fenton found the net to tie the game. Fenton took a pass from Aimee Wronski in the middle of the box and beat Buttron on the ground to near post.

Then, it was Madie Edwards time.

UIU earned a corner kick and Aimee Wronski sent the ball into the middle of the box. The ball bounced off the foot of Rachel Fowler and Edwards flicked a header behind her that squeaked past the Marauder defense and into the net, putting the Peacocks up 2-1.

Less than four minutes later, Edwards scored again. Aimee Wronski sent in a ball toward the box and Edwards was able to chip the charging Marauder goalkeeper, giving the Peacocks a two-goal advantage.

Twenty three seconds later, Edwards tallied her third goal for the hat trick. The Peacocks worked the ball into the box and it bounced around before Edwards found the ball on her foot. She buried it to put the Peacocks ahead for good at 4-1.

"[Madie] is an engine," said Diaz. "When she is on her game, we're a better team. She's so aggressive offensively and she's so strong defensively, when she's at the top of her game, I think she's unstoppable."

The Peacocks outshot the Marauders 29-7 for the game. Aimee Wronski led UIU with eight shots, Edwards had five and Corinne Wronski had three. Reigning NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week Kaitlyn Emanuel went relatively untested after the early surge by Mary and made four saves on the day.

After starting the year 0-4, the Peacocks have now won four straight to get back to .500.

"I don't know that we were ever that far off track, but the results weren't falling our way," said Diaz. "Certainly we're really proud of this, but its one game at a time. So we went 1-0 today and we'll try to do that again Sunday."

Up next for the Peacocks is Minot State at home on Sunday, October 5. Kickoff will be at 11 a.m.
