Recap

Despite taking a one-point lead with just 2:04 left in regulation, the Upper Iowa Women's Basketball team couldn't outlast the Beavers of Bemidji State on the road. The home team used the final ten and a half minutes of their NSIC battle with UIU to go on a 19-8 run and secure a big conference victory. BSU shot 41-percent from the floor and forced 18 Peacock turnovers en route to the 64-59 win.

Despite a game-high 16 points from Whitney Kieffer and 14 points from Lauren Buck, the Peacocks stumbled down the stretch hitting just 3-of-16 shots in the final 11 minutes of action. The ending was eerily similar to the start.

The Beavers jumped out to an early 17-7 lead nearly six minutes into the game, but UIU used a 16-6 run to tie the game up at 23-all at the 7:11 mark in the opening period. Kieffer had the first six points of that run for the Peacocks – all coming off layups. Lindsay Carroll then hit her first three of the game to pull UIU within three, 19-16. That's when Lauren Buck started to get hot.

The junior forward hit two free throws and a jumper before Carroll hit another trifecta which tied the game at 23-23. The teams were neck-and-neck for the final seven minutes of the first half despite eight more points from Buck. The real reason for the run and a stat that foreshadowed the start of the second half was Upper Iowa's defense. The Peacocks switched to a zone scheme and it frustrated the Beavers.

BSU started the game 8-of-11 from the field before UIU made the change defensively. The Beavers missed their next five shots and 7 of their next nine as the Peacocks inched their way back into the contest. UIU shot 45-percent in the first half, but started just 3-of-10 from the floor. The Peacocks also had a hot hand from long range, shooting 42-percent from beyond the arc in the first half thanks to Carroll's perfect 2-of-2 mark from deep.

Buck led all scorers with 12 points at the break on 62-percent shooting (5-of-8) as UIU and BSU headed into halftime all tied up at 36.

The Beavers connected on the first bucket of the second half thanks to a three from Morgan Lee, but UIU kept the game in check with buckets from Olivia Meier, who finished with 6 points and 4 assists, and Kieffer. Trailing by one at the 12-minute mark, Carroll and Kieffer combined for five straight points as the Peacocks retook the lead, 49-45, and stole the momentum.

Buck added to that run with a hard-earned layup in the paint after grabbing back-to-back-to-back offensive rebounds. She finished with 6 boards, but after a red-hot first half she made just 1-of-6 shots in the second stanza. BSU finally found the net with a Kate Warmack bucket, before Carroll hit two free throws on the ensuing Peacock possession.

The four-point lead for UIU didn't last.

BSU's Katie Miller had three of the next five points for the Beavers including a jumper at the 7:33 mark to put her team back out in front by one, 54-53. It took the Peacocks a couple possessions to answer but finally Kieffer connected on a layup to put UIU out in front, 55-54. The Beavers then tied the game with a free throw before adding a three from Tatum Sheley to give BSU a 58-55 lead with just 3:55 remaining in regulation.

The Peacocks went back to Carly Pagel, who found room down low and earned her eighth and ninth points of the game with a layup. The Peacocks then earned a stop on defense and Kieffer gave her team a slim one-point lead after connecting on two free throws. That was the last time UIU led.

The Beavers answered right back as Warmack collected a missed three and earned a put-back bucket in the lane. After a Peacock turnover, BSU converted another bucket in traffic to take a three-point lead with less than a minute to play, 62-59.

UIU had one last chance. With 14.8 seconds on the clock, the Peacocks took a timeout. UIU attempted one last three, but misfired. The Beavers controlled the rebound and added two more free throws to seal the 64-59 victory.

Stat of the Game

The Peacocks shot just 27-percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from three in the second half as BSU outscored UIU, 28-23, in the second half.

Sounding Off

"Our team played hard and we had some chances late, but we had too many turnovers down the stretch to pull off the victory," Head Coach Carol Russell said after the game.
