Upper Iowa traveled over 500 miles on Saturday after posting their big win at Northern State (47-0) to get back to Fayette for their home dual on Sunday versus Southwest Minnesota State. The Peacocks welcomed the Mustangs; both teams entered the dual with perfect NSIC records. Upper Iowa won seven of the ten matches including one by fall and three by major decision to propel them to a 27-9 victory. UIU improves to 11-1-1 on the season and 3-0 in the NSIC, while SMSU drops to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Chris Paulus opened the dual with a major decision at 125 pounds. The redshirt sophomore scored four takedowns including one in the final seconds to earn the 10-2 major.
After Justin Reinsma (#8 NWCA) edged
Matt Paulus at 133 pounds, 11-9, in sudden victory,
Jordan Roths trailed 1-0 heading into the final period at 141 pounds, but the redshirt freshman claimed an escape, takedown and a ride time point for a 4-1 decision giving UIU a 7-3 lead.
Edwin Cooper (#5 NWCA) posted five takedowns en route to his 12-4 major decision and a 31st win of the season.
Zak Benitz came on at 157 pounds and claimed a 12-4 major decision with four takedowns and three nearfall points. He took an early 7-2 lead and then maintained his advantage.
At 165 pounds,
Dalton Westerlund won by decision 8-2 over Kyle Begin claiming two takedowns and three nearfall points. He took a 5-0 lead into the final frame and claimed the six-point win giving Upper Iowa an 18-3 lead.
SMSU pulled within nine, 18-9, after wins by Jacob Begin (#6 NWCA) by decision 7-3 and Andrew Rodas by decision 3-0 at 174 and 184 pounds.
Carl Broghammer (#2 NWCA) got a takedown early in his 197-pound match and worked his position to earn three nearfall points. No sooner than the nearfall points were given, the redshirt senior got the fall (2:38) to put the dual out of reach and give the home team a 24-9 lead. The win was his 30th of the season and he is now just 7 short of the all-time record at UIU.
At heavyweight,
Logan Hopp (#7 NWCA) had his hands full and trailed 3-2 early in the third period. Hopp got a takedown in the final 30 seconds to take a 4-3 lead, but Cole Wilson escaped quickly and tied the match. In sudden victory, Hopp scored the winning takedown and earned his 24th win of the year.
Next Up
Next weekend, the Peacocks will travel to Minot State University and the University of Mary. UIU will face the Beavers on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. and the Marauders on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m.
