The #10 Peacocks placed seventh after splitting a pair of matches on the final day of the NWCA National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa.  Upper Iowa took on Fort Hays State, who received votes in the latest NWCA Poll in the morning match and came up short 25-21.  UIU rebounded with a 38-6 victory over #19 Lake Erie to earn seventh place.
 
Carl Broghammer (#2 NWCA) and Edwin Cooper (#5 NWCA) capped off their outstanding weekends with two more wins today to post perfect 5-0 records including four six-point victories apiece. 
 
Against the Tigers, the Peacocks dropped their 125 pound match, but rallied with a fall (4:24) by Matt Paulus at 133 to take a 6-3 lead.  The teams traded falls at 141 and 149 with Cooper picking up his third fall of the tournament in just 34 seconds to push UIU back into the lead 12-9.  Fort Hays State took control of the match with four straight wins at 157, 165, 174 and 184 including a fall at 157 and a major at 184.  Trailing 25-12, Broghammer came to the mat and won his match when his opponent could not continue midway through the opening period.  Logan Hopp picked up a 5-2 decision at heavyweight setting the final score at 25-21.
 
After the loss, the Peacocks moved to the seventh place match and a rematch against the Storm of Lake Erie, who they defeated 40-8 in their opening match.  Upper Iowa started with a 4-0 lead thanks to an 8-0 major decision by Mitch Funk at 125, but the Storm rallied with a decision at 133 to trail by just one, 4-3.  Duane Richardson earned a win at 141 as Lake Erie forfeited the weight and Cooper earned his fourth fall (1:25) of the weekend to push UIU's lead to 16-3. Zak Benitz and Dalton Westerlund kept the momentum rolling at 157 and 165 pounds with upsets over Zach Vargo (#2 NWCA) by fall (5:49) and Tyler Tesny (#6 NWCA) by decision (6-3), respectively.  Leading 25-3, Colbey Vance posted a 5-1 win at 174 pounds, but Lake Erie put their final points on the board in the 184-pound match.  Broghammer claimed a 12-0 major decision at 197 and Hopp recorded a 5-4 decision to push UIU's winning margin to 32 points, 38-6.
 
The Peacocks will open their Northern Sun Conference dual schedule this Friday, Jan. 17, with a home dual against the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead beginning at 7 p.m.
