Peacocks to Open Season at #2 Concordia and Minnesota State

This Weekend in Peacock Volleyball… The Peacock volleyball team opens play in the Northern Sun Conference this weekend with a pair of matches. Upper Iowa will travel to Concordia University, St. Paul on Thursday night to face the #2 Golden Bears at 7 p.m. UIU will then return to Fayette to host the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato in Dorman Gym on Saturday at 4 p.m.

"Jen"-eral Electric… Sophomore Jennifer Mundt has continued her strong start to the season with 50 more kills in the last five matches giving her the third most (120) in the NSIC this season. The Utica, Minn. product is ninth in the NSIC in kills/set (3.53) and eighth in points/set (4.1). In addition to her offense, Mundt has registered 39 digs, 18 blocks and 8 aces.

"Hail" to the Chief… Junior Hailey Brown has been doing a bit of everything for the Peacocks. As a setter and outside hitter, Brown has 57 kills, 219 assists, 65 digs, 13 service aces and 11 blocks. The Elroy, Wis. native is one of three starters returning to Prochaska Court this season.

This Freshman is "Berry" Good… Freshman Chelsea Berry has made an instant impact on the Peacock squad this season after stepping in for an injured Melanie Behnke. Berry has racked up 91 kills, 111 digs, 11 blocks and 9 aces in her first nine collegiate matches. Her kills and digs totals are both the second highest on the team.

New Kids on the Block… The Peacock block has been a staple of the defense at Upper Iowa for the last four years, but with the graduation of Kayla Wagner and Maryn Fulton, UIU is relying on new faces to keep up the results at the net. Leading the way is junior Haylie Franklin, who has recorded 24 blocks including 6 solo stops. Freshman Alisha VanderWoude has added 22 blocks with 11 being solo denials. In addition to the two Peacock middles, UIU has gotten help at the net from Mundt (18 blocks), Brown (11), Berry (11) and Tricia Hanson (6).

Last week for the #2 Golden Bears… Concordia (8-1) won the Colorado Premier Challenge for the fourth time in eight years. Concordia has now won six matches against ranked opponents this season. In the tournament opener the Golden Bears took a straight set victory over Florida Southern (5-3). The second match of the day was another 3-0 victory over #15 Truman (5-3) to advance to the gold bracket on Saturday. In the semifinal match the Golden Bears came back after dropping the first set to knock off #11 Angelo State (6-2) in four sets. The championship match was the tenth meeting between CU and the #1 Tampa Spartans (7-1), with the Golden Bears taking the match in four sets.

Last week for the Mavericks… The Minnesota State volleyball team hosted the Maverick Invitational this past weekend where it went 1-2 as it defeated the University of Illinois Springfield, 3-1, before falling to Black Hills State, 3-2 and Northern State, 3-1. The Mavericks will enter league play with an overall record of 4-3. The Mavericks were led offensively by junior Jenna McNallan (Andover, Minn.) who finished the weekend with 37 kills (2.85 per set), while hitting .303, additionally the outside hitter amassed four blocks, four assists and 21 digs.
