This Weekend in Peacock Wrestling… Upper Iowa remains in the hunt for a fourth Northern Sun Conference championship heading into their final weekend of competition in the regular season. The Peacocks will head to Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday for a dual with the #15 Vikings of Augustana before returning home to welcome the #1 Huskies of St. Cloud State on Sunday at 2 p.m. UIU is 5-1 in conference duals and trails #10 Minnesota State and #1 St. Cloud State in the standings; both the Mavericks and Huskies are undefeated in NSIC action this season.
Peacocks in the Polls... Upper Iowa is currently ranked #6 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll and four individuals are also ranked in the top 8 in the nation. The ranked Peacocks are
Trevor Franklin (133, #2),
Wade Gobin (165, #4),
Mitch Schultz (184, #5), and
Carl Broghammer (197, #1).
Man on a Mission... Carl Broghammer has won nineteen straight matches to post a 34-2 record on the season. Broghammer has 18 pins this season, which is fifth-best in the country among all divisions, while his 9 falls against Division II opponents have him tied for the lead among NCAA Division II grapplers. His only two losses are against a pair of Division I foes from the Big 10 Conference. Broghammer has earned bonus points in 27 of his 36 matches. The Manchester, Iowa native is holding on to the top spot in the race for the NCAA's Most Dominant Wrestler Award as he is scoring an average of 5 points per match for UIU.
Returning to Form... Two-time National Champion
Trevor Franklin has begun his quest for a third straight national title. After a rough start to his senior campaign, the South New Berlin, N.Y. product has picked up victories in eight of his last ten matches. The two losses came to last year's National Runner-up and current #1 ranked wrestler, Andrew Pokorny of St. Cloud State, and the current #5 ranked wrestler, Justin Reinsma of Southwest Minnesota State. Pokorny was victorious 8-5 at the National Duals, while Reinsma won a 3-2 decision last weekend.
Last Week for the #6 Peacocks... Upper Iowa escaped Marshall, Minnesota with a 19-18 win thanks to a point on criteria (match points in favor of UIU, 35-31) that broke a tie after all ten matches. The Peacocks and Mustangs each won five matches including one pin, but UIU was able to edge their hosts in the end. UIU then faced off with the Dragons of MSU Moorhead on Saturday afternoon and won eight of the ten matches to claim a 28-6 win on the road. The pair of wins improved the team’s record to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC. Chris Paulus (125), Jordan Rinken (149) and Blake Sorensen (174) all joined Broghammer at 2-0 over the weekend, while Trevor Franklin (133, #2 NWCA), Bryce Lumzy (157), Wade Gobin (165, #4 NWCA), Brock Gobin (184) and Jeremy Brazil (HWT) all picked up one win.
Last Week for the #10 Vikings... Jayd Docken pinned his way to a 16-4 record on the season winning two bouts by fall this weekend. Docken, the sixth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 197 pounds, pinned Baker Haar of Northern State in 2:17 on Saturday before making even quicker work of Minot State’s Joe Johnson, winning by fall in 1:36. The sophomore has recorded five pins this season and won five major decisions and a tech. fall. Nate Herda extended his match-win streak to six and moved to 22-4 on the season, winning back-to-back tech. falls as the Vikings went 2-0 in NSIC action over the weekend. Herda, ranked third nationally, won a 25-10 tech. fall over Northern State’s Grant Steen on Saturday before picking up an 18-3 tech. fall over Minot State’s on Sunday. The senior has won three tech. falls, four majors and delivered one pin on the season.
Last Week for the #1 Huskies... Chris Brassell helped the Huskies chart a 39-6 win over University of Mary on Feb. 1 with an 11-1 major decision victory over Kriss McLeary at 197-pounds. The victory moved SCSU’s overall record to 18-0 and 5-0 in NSIC competition. The #1 ranked Huskies scored a 39-6 victory over University of Mary on Feb. 1 at Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies’ only two setbacks on the evening were at 141-pounds and 157-pounds against Mary. The victory improved SCSU’s overall record to 18-0 overall and 5-0 in NSIC competiton. The victory also marked the Huskies’ 44th consecutive dual match victory, which dates back to an 18-13 loss at Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011. Individually, SCSU is paced by senior Shamus O’Grady with a 29-1 record. He is ranked #1 in the nation at 184-pounds and is within sight of the team’s single-season win record of 40 victories posted by Tad Merritt in 2010-11 (40-2). O’Grady has not lost a match since a setback against DI Minnesota’s Matt Pfarr in the title bout at the Finn Grinaker Open in Moorhead on Nov. 17.
What's Next... Upper Iowa is hosting the 2013 NCAA Division II Super Regional 3 Championships in Waterloo, Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 24. The tournament will be held at Young Arena and the doors will open to the public at 9 a.m. The top four placewinners at each of the ten weight classes will earn a berth to the NCAA National Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on March 8-9.
