This Weekend in Peacock Wrestling… Upper Iowa travels to face the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State and the Dragons of MSU Moorhead this Friday and Saturday. The Peacocks are 3-1 in the Northern Sun this season with three dominating wins over U-Mary, 36-9, Minot State (40-11), and Northern State (41-3). UIU's lone loss in the NSIC this season came in Mankato, Minn., where the Peacocks fell 21-15 to the then-ranked #13 Mavericks of Minnesota State. The dual with the Mustangs will begin at 7 p.m. Friday night, while Saturday's action with MSU Moorhead is set for 3 p.m.
Peacocks in the Polls... Upper Iowa is currently ranked #6 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll and four individuals are also ranked in the top 8 in the nation. The ranked Peacocks are Trevor Franklin (133, #2), Wade Gobin (165, #4), Mitch Schultz (184, #5), and Carl Broghammer (197, #1).
Man on a Mission... Carl Broghammer has won four straight matches by fall to improve to 32-2 on the season. Broghammer has 17 pins this season, which tie him for second in the country among all divisions. His only two losses are against a pair of Division I foes and he has now won 17 straight matches. Broghammer has earned bonus points in 25 of his 34 matches. The Manchester, Iowa native recently took over the top spot in the race for the NCAA's Most Dominant Wrestler Award as he is scoring an average of 5 points per match for UIU. He is tied at the top of the most fall leaderboard as well with 8 against NCAA Division II competition.
Returning to Form... Two-time National Champion Trevor Franklin has begun his quest for a third straight national title. After a rough start to his senior campaign, the South New Berlin, N.Y. product is on a four-match win streak and has picked up victories in seven of his last eight matches. The lone loss came to last year's National Runner-up and current #1 ranked wrestler, Andrew Pokorny, of St. Cloud State. The Husky 133-pounder defeated Franklin at the National Duals by an 8-5 decision. In his four-match win streak, he has posted three bonus-point victories with a pair of falls and a major decision.
Last Week for the Peacocks... The Peacocks bounced back with a 41-3 victory over Northern State at home on Sunday, after a 21-15 loss at #13 Minnesota State on Thursday night. Four Peacocks picked up wins at MSU including wins by decision for Trevor Franklin (#2 NCAA), Jordan Rinken and Bryce Lumzy and a win by fall by Broghammer. On Sunday, Upper Iowa won decisively, 41-3, only surrendering the final match to improve their dual record to 7-3 overall including 3-1 in NSIC action. Four wrestlers recorded pins for UIU, increasing their team total to132, which leads all college divisions. Chris Paulus, Franklin, Lumzy and Broghammer claimed the pins, while Jordan Rinken and Blake Sorensen posted major decision victories. NSU’s Matt Meuleners, the two-time defending heavyweight NCAA Champion earned the only Wolves’ win of the night with an 8-2 decision over UIU’s Jeremy Brazil.
Last Week for the Mustangs... Jacob Begin (165) picked up his ninth and tenth straight victories this weekend with major decisions over Blake Lundgren (Northern State) 10-2 and Gabe Fogarty (St. Cloud State) 11-0. Begin has been dominate for the Mustangs this season as the junior has five pins, four major decisions and a five-point technical fall. Begin was one of eight SMSU wrestlers that picked up wins versus Northern State as the Mustangs cruised to its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual win of the season, 32-8 over Northern State. On Saturday, Begin was one of four SMSU wrestlers to pick up a bout victory over No. 1 St. Cloud State. The Mustangs fought hard and scored 15 points but were unable to snap SCSU’s 42 straight dual winning streak.
Last Week for the Dragons... Matt Lewellen finished 2-0 on the week with a pin to help the Dragons go unbeaten in a pair of NSIC duals. In the Dragon’s 23-13 win over U-Mary, Lewellen earned a 7-3 win over Kriss McCleary at 197 pounds to help give the Dragons a 17-13 lead with one weight remaining. A night later in a 41-6 win over Minot State, Lewellen pinned Joe Johnson in 2:01at 197 to help put the match well out of reach. Lewellen is 13-7 on the year for the Dragons. Junior Casey Williams went 2-0 this week at 149 pounds to help MSU Moorhead earn a pair of NSIC dual wins. Williams beat Landon Della Silva by major decision, 13-3 to help the Dragons to a 23-13 victory over Mary. A night later, the Dragons won 41-6 as Williams beat Minot State’s Donovan Williams by technical fall, 16-1. Williams is 14-4.
Who's Next... The Peacocks will wrap up the regular season next week with one road dual at Augustana on Friday, Feb. 8, and a home dual against #1 St. Cloud State University on Saturday, Feb. 10.
