The #21 Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul dominated the opening minutes of tonight's NSIC game racing out to a 19-4 lead on the way to a twelve-point lead at halftime. Over the final 27 and a half minutes of the game, Upper Iowa outscored their hosts 51-50, but an early eighteen-point hole was too much to overcome in the 80-63 loss.
The difference in the game was ball security. Upper Iowa committed 18 turnovers in the contest including 10 in the first half most of which came early in the half. Concordia gave the ball away only two times in the game providing them with 19 more shots in the game.
After UIU fell behind 30-12 with seven and a half minutes to play in the first half, the Peacocks used an 11-2 run to cut the gap to 9 points thanks to five points from Olivia Winkler and four points from Emily Gustafson.
The Golden Bears restored their double-digit lead and UIU trailed 38-26 heading into the locker room for halftime due to their 10-1 disadvantage in turnovers over the first twenty minutes.
In the second half, Concordia built their lead to twenty-one, 54-33, following an old-fashioned three-point play which closed out a 16-7 start to the final twenty minutes.
Upper Iowa was able to cut the gap to thirteen points on several occasions, but did not get inside of that margin until the eight minute mark when a three-pointer out of the hand of Lindsay Carroll caught the net to pull the Peacocks within twelve, 62-50.
The home team did not let the momentum stay with their guests for long as they reestablished their big lead taking their largest lead of the game, 76-52, with three minutes left to play. UIU was able to shave a few points off the lead, but fell by seventeen in the end, 80-63.
